Throughout this month, we'll continue to flow with the dragon and bear to support kidney and liver health, smooth flow of blood and qi (healthy circulation), alleviate backpain and low energy, all while enhancing strength, flexibility, and vitality.

❄️🐦As we transition through the seasons (winter to spring - water to wood elements), adapting our qigong practices provides profound benefits for both body and mind. We also connect with a few earth element practices to ease the transition.

Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing modality which involves applying pressure with the fingers or thumbs to key points on the body to stimulate healing. It’s similar to acupuncture, but without using needles.

There are 400+ acupressure points on the body which support physical, mental, emotional, and sometimes spiritual health and wellness. Most acupressure points are along meridians (energy pathways) where qi (lifeforce energy) flows.

➡️Connect with this water element meridian (the kidneys) to boost your foundational energy and more.

❗As this point pulls from your reserves, be mindful of how often you utilize this acupressure point. If you're feeling consistently depleted, practice the visualization above for support.

There are 4 kidney patterns in Traditional Chinese Medicine, each with distinctive symptoms and treatment approaches.

Do you experience any of the following symptoms?
Check out the recommendations for support!

Kidney Qi Deficiency
This pattern might manifest as lower back pain, knee weakness, premature aging, and insecurity.
➡️Recommendations: Foods such as salmon, blackberries, and oysters can help nourish kidney qi, while lifestyle changes should focus on conserving energy and avoiding excesses like alcohol and stress.

Kidney Yin Deficiency
Symptoms include dizziness, tinnitus, insomnia, and low energy in the legs.
➡️Recommendations: Foods like soy, blueberries, and seaweed are ideal as they're cooling. Exclude hot tea and alcohol as these exacerbate the condition’s inherent heat.

Kidney Yang Deficiency
This pattern usually presents as a cold body, low libido, edema, and inactivity.
➡️Recommendations: Warming foods such as nuts, cinnamon, and ginger are recommended, while it’s important to avoid raw, cold foods and excessive salt (due to poor circulation and water retention issues).

Kidney Essence Deficiency
Signs include poor memory, brittle bones, and hair loss.
➡️Recommendations: Nutrient-rich animal products like bone marrow and organ meats. For vegetarians or vegans, spirulina can be useful. It’s important to protect the jing (foundational energy) by avoiding overindulgence, like eating too much and unhealthy habits like smoking.

Hi friends, Sarah here.

As a healer and guide, I feel a deep commitment and passion when it comes to showing up for others - creating moments of mind-body-spirit restoration through qigong mindful movement, acupressure, meditation, and more.

The state of the world and in the US hit me really hard the past few weeks. So much so that I went into hermit-mode and cancelled most of my plans (which the recent snow and icy temperatures only reinforced).

With the constant nervous system overload that many of us are exposed to, making time for moments of rest and restoration is so crucial for our homeostasis and vitality. [Link to free event below]

My chinchilla Nikki 🐭 (my little Buddha) is well versed in balance.
When she feels good, she plays.
When she needs to recoup, she rests.

🥰If you're in need of some restoration, join us this Saturday (Feb 14th) at 10:30am-12pm for a FREE Online Wellness Class + Community Circle. Register to receive the zoom link: https://www.qigonghw.com/qigong-classes2/2/14/26-2

➡️Must register to receive the zoom link ⬅️

As a collective, we need healing, support, and light more than ever right now. Healing is amplified within sacred community.

During our experience together, we’ll practice mindful movement (qigong), acupressure, and meditation from the comfort of your own home or space.

Then, you’re invited to share whatever support or healing you may need - perhaps simply taking solace in the fact that we’re joining together to create more light - offer kindness to others, and anything else that feels authentic in the moment.

You’re welcome to bring a journal, tea, sage, crystals, oracle cards, and/or anything else that brings you comfort to connect with during our experience.

*This event is in lieu of my previously scheduled Sensory Self-Care: A Journey to Love and Wellness workshop at Manor Mill.

⭐Tips for Upgrading Your Sleep Hygiene!⭐

[First, do the sleep habits check-in.]

1. Mind-Body Check-in:
- Practice deep breathing, meditation, and/or gentle stretching to help you relax before bed.
- You may also find reading soothing (but nothing too mentally stimulating).
- For further relaxation, drink some warm tea (ex: chamomile for a more gentle calm, or valerian root for stronger support).

2. Screen Time:
- Reduce exposure to screens at least an hour before bed, as blue light can interfere with your body's natural sleep-wake cycle.
- You can also wear blue light blocking glasses to help with the transition (and reduce eyestrain).

3. Temperature:
- Science suggests the ideal temperature for restful sleep is between 60-68 degrees Fahrenheit, helping you fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper sleep cycles.

4. Noise:
- As much as possible, ensure your sleeping environment is free from disruptions.
- Consider using a white noise machine, soothing music, and/or earplugs.

5. Light:
- Use blackout curtains or an eye mask to block out residual light, signaling to your body to naturally produce melatonin for better sleep.

6. Bedtime Consistency:
- Aim to go to bed at the same time each night, whether on the weekdays or weekends, to regulate your body’s internal clock. Try shifting your bedtime 15-minutes closer to your preferred time each night (or take a few days to adjust to each 15-minute shift before adjusting again).

7. Sleep Duration + Quality:
- If you’re struggling to fall asleep for a while, get out of bed and come back to the mindfulness practices above (deep breathing, meditation, stretching, reading, tea, or any other practice that resonates with you).
- Track the number of hours you get each night, and notice the shifts as you implement these sleep hygiene tips.

The Problem with Too Much or Too Little Rest

⬆️ Too Much Rest
Let’s take a brief look back to the late 4th century when the Shaolin Monastery in China was founded. These Shaolin monks dedicated their lives to meditation and spiritual enlightenment. Unfortunately, focusing so much on meditation and stillness often left them physically weak and unable to properly defend their Monastery against attacks. As a result, around the year 527, they developed a self-defense practice to physically strengthen their bodies. This practice is called kung fu, with its roots in qigong.

They recognized the importance of balancing both body and mind for more integrated health and wellness.

⬇️ Too Little Rest
Coming back to today, especially in cultures that glorify productivity and constant action, phrases like "sleep is for the weak" or "I'll sleep when I'm dead” can (falsely) be seen as badges of honor. It’s no surprise that people commonly feel exhausted, worn down, and like they’re constantly just trying to keep up with day-to-day life.

☯️ Back to Balance
Traditional Chinese Medicine emphasizes balance between yin and yang, aligning with the natural cycles with ease and flow. In this context, rest/sleep is yin and action is yang.

In the Northern Hemisphere, we continue to move through winter, a time that emphasizes yin energy, a slowing down with the colder temperatures and earlier nightfall. Winter is peak time to nourish our foundation: kidneys, spine/bones, and brain. In doing so, we experience greater energy and vitality, as well as the ability to more deeply rest and feel restored.

Looking for yin support, vitality, and restoration? Join 1 (or more!) of 5 weekly qigong classes, with the next one tonight (Tues) at 7-8pm EST online. https://www.qigonghw.com/qigong-classes

Take Control of Your Health & Wellness

Have seen people needlessly suffer - and certainly having experienced it myself - I care deeply about providing opportunities, insight, and knowledge so that others may thrive, instead of just survive.

Over time, we've lost our connection with our internal world, instead focusing so heavily on circumstances and what's going on outside of us. For successful healing to occur, shifting our attention inward is critical. This journey begins with a willingness to look deeper into yourself and what's keeping you stuck. Also, with an openness to experiencing alternative healing methods - ones that have been utilized in China for thousands of years.

We are so powerful in creating our experiences. It's time to take back control of your health and wellness, achieved by learning ways to effectively hone the natural wisdom of your bodies and minds. Are you ready?
