We provide a nutritional foundation for a better education at Tipton Elementary School.

08/24/2022

This is the fourteenth year West Street Christian Church has been offering weekend food to elementary students at Tipton Community School Corporation. Trinity Wesleyan Church is our partner again this year. The two churches cover all the grade levels at Tipton Elementary School.

There is open enrollment at any time. Enrollment cards are available in the school office. The children are anonymous to those preparing the Bags of Blessings. Stapled to the bag is a tag with the teacher's name and the child's lunch number. Pre-K, K, 1, and 2 grades will bring home a black bag one day and a blue bag another day. Two bags lighten the load for the little ones. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 receive one bag at the end of the week. Each week we send home shelf-stable milk, a breakfast item like cereal or oatmeal, canned fruit, canned vegetable, canned meat or a can of pasta and meat, and a snack like granola bars, raisins, or pudding cups. We have a three week menu cycle. Our first delivery this year will be made so the children we bring home food on Friday, September 9. Approximately once a month, we will also include in the bag, a double bagged package of hygiene products. The Sept. 9th package will contain a small jug of GAIN wash detergent, a box of BOUNCE, and Paw Patrol 2 in 1 shampoo. These hygiene products are available through a grant we have received.

Backpack Blessings Tipton Indiana

What is Backpack Blessings? It is a program to provide weekend food for children. Each child at Tipton Elementary School is eligible to apply. The program is designed to help cover any gap experienced by a child due to the unavailability of food in the home over a weekend.

The food is child-friendly and will be delivered in a rolling backpack to school on Fridays. Each child is responsible for returning the backpack on Monday in order to receive food the next Friday.

Each week, the backpack will contain a quart of vacuum-packed milk, breakfast food, canned fruit, canned vegetable, some protein, pasta, and a snack or dessert item. The menu will rotate through three menus (one each week).

The food will not need refrigeration, is nutritious, and requires little preparation.
