It’s been quite some time since I made a post. Life took over for awhile but hopefully I can get back to being more active. I still make and use my own products and have made some wonderful discoveries. I will try to share them soon. For this post I just want to remind everyone of the amazing benefits that Tea Tree Oil and Eucalyptus have in fighting off and preventing viruses and colds.
Tea Tree oil works much like an attispetic for cuts and scrapes and even as a hand sanitizer. It works great for reducing blemishes or dark spots on the skin as well. Be sure to dilute with water or a carrier oil like Vitamin E or Coconut Oil.
It is also great for purifying the air, not to mention opening up your sinuses. Just add a couple drops to a steam pot.
Eucalyptus Oil has been used for centuries to clear odor from the air and clear congestion or stuffy noses. Just add a few drops to a steam pot. Eucalyptus is a very effective mosquito repellent as well. Just add a few drops to your favorite carrier oil and apply. Use as a disinfectant by adding a few drops to water in a spray bottle, great for sanitizing door handles and switches. So that’s my green advice for fighting the constant barrage of winter viruses. Got other tips? Please share!!

COMING SOON "Chamomile Soap" Chamomile is an age-old medicinal herb known in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. Scientific research over the past 20 years has confirmed many of the traditional uses for the plant's therapeutic activity, including antiseptic, antibacterial, anti fungal, and anti-allergenic activity. Soothes skin rashes (including eczema), minor burns and sunburn. Used as a lotion or added in oil form to a cool bath, chamomile may ease the itching of eczema and other rashes and reduces skin inflammation. It may also speed healing and prevent bacterial infection.

Handmade Soap vs Commercial Soap Part 2

Reason #3: Traditional Soapmaking:
Many cultures have been making natural soap for centuries. Traditional handmade soaps are made one of two ways: hot process and cold process. Cold Process soap is made by mixing sodium hydroxide with water, then blending it with oils, adding essential oils, natural colorants and pouring it into molds. Natural Glycerin is formed during this process. Glycerin is a prized natural skin softener that soothes the skin. Glycerin is removed from most commercial soap and sold as a by-product, you end up needing a moisturizer to compensate. Hot process soap is made essentially the same way except it is cured over heat.

The method is simply personal preference, though some say that cold process is the true, original form of soap making and is also my personal preference.

The methods of hand crafted soap are the opposite of commercial soap which is made in mass production in factories. Commercial soap is made using a continuous flow method, The soap base is continually being made in the same “batch” of soap. It is then blended with fillers and chemicals.

Reason #4: Handmade Soap Feels Amazing:
Handmade soap preserves the integrity of the oils used. Coconut oil goes in, coconut oil comes out. Shea butter goes in, shea butter comes out. Because of this, the oils and butters maintain their skin nourishing properties, like vitamins and minerals in the finished bar. HBS does not use animal fats, fragrance oils or dye in our soap. Only pure organic oils and butters, organic essential oils for scent and food grade sodium hydroxide are used.

A crafty soapmaker can customize a recipe to produce characteristics in the soap naturally instead of adding chemicals to achieve the same goal. To make a harder bar of soap, add more olive oil. To make a super bubbly soap add more castor oil. Commercial soap is likely to have synthetic chemicals added to produce similar results.

The best way to find out is to put it to the test! Try a natural soap and you will never go back!

Most people do not realize there is a big difference between store bought commercial soap and handmade soap.  Brand name soap companies spend millions each year convincing us that their soaps contain natural ingredients when in fact they are actually detergents that include chemical hardeners, foami...

Gentle Natural Cleanser

Got Milk.... I recently rediscovered an old remedy. I can remember doing this in my 20's. Milk is a natural gentle cleanser. It cleanses without removing beneficial oil. Just soak a cotton ball in a small cup of milk and massage into the skin. The milk removes dirt and cleanses the pores but does not dry out your skin. A great alternative to facial scrubs during winter.
To get the full benefits it is suggested you do this 2 - 3 times a week.
