At 18, Lily Simone was working as a hospice aide, discovering that what could feel overwhelming instead felt like purpose. https://myut.link/602ec4

Today, she’s a registered nurse on the Heart and Vascular Care Unit at The University of Toledo Medical Center — caring for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments.

A graduate of the College of Health and Human Services, Lily represents the caliber of nurses UToledo prepares: compassionate, highly skilled and ready to lead.

Now, Lily is continuing her journey by pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice while serving patients on a nationally recognized cardiac unit — one that recently earned a Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

❄️ Extreme cold is expected across northwest Ohio. With wind chills forecast to drop as low as 13 degrees below zero early next week, taking steps to stay warm and safe is critical.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook as arctic air moves into the region, with the coldest wind chills expected Monday night into Tuesday.

UToledo Health encourages community members to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and check on older adults and others who may be vulnerable to cold-related illness.

Warming shelters are available in the Toledo area ➡️ toledo.oh.gov/shelter

What should you know about heart health — and when is it time to see a cardiologist?

Dr. George Moukarbel, a cardiologist at UToledo Health specializing in advanced heart failure, answers common questions about cardiovascular symptoms, simple steps to improve heart health, and how heart disease can progress over time. In this Ask the Expert Q&A, he also explains how advanced therapies, catheter-based procedures and devices like the WATCHMAN implant are helping patients live longer, healthier lives.

Dr. Moukarbel shares insight into managing heart failure, how care decisions are made by multidisciplinary “heart teams,” and how innovations in cardiology are transforming treatment — often with less invasive options and faster recovery.
