Upper Crossed Syndrome (UCS) is a common postural imbalance pattern seen in people who spend long hours sitting, working on computers, or using smartphones. It is characterized by a crossed pattern of tight and weak muscles around the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Over time, this imbalance alters alignment, reduces movement efficiency, and increases stress on the cervical spine and shoulder joints.
In this pattern, the upper trapezius and levator scapulae become tight and overactive due to constant shoulder elevation and stress posture. At the same time, the pectoralis major and minor tighten from prolonged forward shoulder positioning. These tight muscles pull the head forward and round the shoulders, narrowing the chest and reducing thoracic mobility.
Conversely, key stabilizing muscles become weak and inhibited. The deep neck flexors lose strength and endurance, making it difficult to maintain proper head alignment. In the upper back, the lower trapezius and serratus anterior weaken, reducing scapular stability and proper upward rotation during arm movement. This imbalance disrupts normal scapulohumeral rhythm and may contribute to shoulder impingement patterns.
Biomechanically, forward head posture increases load on the cervical spine — for every inch the head moves forward, the effective weight on the neck significantly increases. Rounded shoulders reduce subacromial space and alter shoulder mechanics, leading to stiffness, pain, and reduced overhead mobility.
Common symptoms include neck pain, shoulder tightness, headaches, upper back fatigue, and reduced posture endurance. Addressing this imbalance requires a combined approach: stretching tight muscles (pectorals, upper trapezius, levator scapulae), strengthening weak stabilizers (deep neck flexors, lower trapezius, serratus anterior), and improving ergonomic posture habits.
Correcting Upper Crossed Syndrome not only improves posture but also enhances breathing mechanics, shoulder function, and long-term spinal health.

** Patients that travel in from the north and/or east of Topeka. 👇👇👇

I will do my best to inform patients of the temporary changes at time of scheduling or day of appointment. Best plan is to add an additional 10 minutes to your drive time in case you have to take an unplanned detour or are unable to take the turn you need. The 24 highway and K4 intersection will be continuing to change over the next 30 days or so it sounds. Then be set up in this configuration until early 2027.

🔶🔶Update on traffic changes for U.S. 24 project in SN, JF counties

Temporary adjustments will be made to the traffic changes scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 16, on the Kansas Department of Transportation’s U.S. 24 improvements project in Shawnee and Jefferson counties.

As previously announced, U.S. 24 traffic between Goldwater Road and Muddy Creek will be shifted to one lane in each direction on the new eastbound lanes, and the K-4/Oakland Expressway ramps to and from westbound U.S. 24 will close. This configuration is expected to be in place until early 2027. The westbound U.S. 24 ramp to northbound K-4 will also close for approximately five months. https://bit.ly/4afxpjc

The southbound K-4 ramp to westbound U.S. 24 will remain open but will temporarily provide access to the south K-4/Oakland Expressway ramp only. To access westbound U.S. 24 from southbound K-4, motorists can follow the marked detour on N.E. 46th Street and Topeka Boulevard or use alternate routes. These restrictions are expected to be in place for approximately 30 working days while a crossover is constructed that will connect K-4 ramp traffic to westbound U.S. 24.

Once the crossover is complete, the southbound K-4 ramp will connect traffic to westbound U.S. 24 only. Access to the south K-4/Oakland Expressway ramp will fully close at this time. Motorists can then follow the detour on westbound U.S. 24 to Topeka Boulevard, back onto eastbound U.S. 24 to the southbound K-4/Oakland Expressway exit.

All project work and traffic changes are conditions permitting and subject to change.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit KanDrive.gov or call 511. For updates on highway projects in northeast Kansas, visit ksdot.gov/NortheastNews.

One of the greatest forms of self-development is getting your body in shape.

And it has nothing to do with vanity or looking better in front of the mirror, or even weighing less on the scale.

When you go from being unhealthy to in shape, you will come face-to-face with your deepest fears and biggest weaknesses.

I've seen people come face-to-face with addictions, coping mechanisms, how they have neglected their families, and even realized that they've kept themselves in the wrong relationships.

And for this reason...this is why most people quit.

But those who make it to the other side will gain something far greater. They will gain awareness about themselves. They will reach a new level of self-development.

They will have clarity of body and mind, which they will use to enhance every part of their life.

So understand this: There are no shortcuts. This s**t is hard until it becomes easy.

But when you emerge from the other side, you'll realize it was so worth it.

So don't give up. Stay resilient. Keep showing up.

Your future self is waiting.

I’m as frustrated with the never ending construction as all of you.
Here’s the latest in lane closures and traffic reroute looking to change mid February. I want to thank all of my patients for being patient regarding all of the traffic and construction mess.

⚠️PLEASE NOTE: Updates on U.S. 24 traffic changes, posted Friday, Feb. 13: bit.ly/4bVDfZS

🔶U.S. 24 project in SN, JF counties entering next phase

The next phase of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s U.S. 24 improvements project in Shawnee and Jefferson counties is expected to begin next week, as reconstruction of the eastbound corridor between Goldwater Road and Muddy Creek nears completion.

On or around Tuesday, Feb. 10, eastbound U.S. 24 will partially reopen, along with the south K-4/Oakland Expressway ramps and local road tie-ins. Eastbound traffic will be shifted, and both directions of U.S. 24 will be temporarily restricted to their respective outside lanes. Happy Hollow Road and Barton Road will fully close at their U.S. 24 junctions at this time.

On or around Monday, Feb. 16, westbound U.S. 24 will fully close for reconstruction. Both directions will then utilize the eastbound lanes in a single-lane, head-to-head configuration until early 2027.

During this time, the following closures and detours will be in place:

*️⃣Northbound K-4/Oakland Expressway ramp onto westbound U.S. 24 will be closed.
o Detour: Eastbound U.S. 24 to northbound K-4, west on N.E. 46th Street, south on Topeka Boulevard to westbound U.S. 24.

*️⃣Westbound U.S. 24 ramp to southbound K-4/Oakland Expressway will be closed.
o Detour: Westbound U.S. 24 to Topeka Boulevard, loop back onto eastbound U.S. 24 to the southbound K-4/Oakland Expressway exit.

*️⃣Westbound U.S. 24 ramp to northbound K-4 will close for approximately 5 months.
o Detour: Westbound U.S. 24 to Topeka Boulevard, loop back onto eastbound U.S. 24 to the northbound K-4 exit.

*️⃣After the westbound U.S. 24 ramp to northbound K-4 reopens, the southbound K-4 ramp onto westbound U.S. 24 will close.
o Once closed, the detour will be west on N.E. 46th Street, south on Topeka Boulevard to westbound U.S. 24.

Motorists can use the designated detour routes or other routes that are not marked. Traffic will be controlled using signs, channelizers, barricades and temporary pavement markings.

All project work and traffic changes are conditions permitting and subject to change.

More information about the U.S. 24 improvements project can be found on the project website ksdot.gov/US-24-Shawnee-County.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit KanDrive.gov or call 511. For updates on highway projects in northeast Kansas, visit ksdot.gov/NortheastNews.

Why Engage?

The foundation-

The practice of chiropractic is based upon the foundational principle that the body has the capability to heal from within, and when necessary adapt to changes in its environment. This is what we call innate. Scientifically we know the nervous system is the master system of the body which controls and coordinates all other organ systems of the body, and relates the body to the environment. The nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord which is protected by the vertebrae that make up the spine of the animal. The spine, is designed to allow movement of the animal’s body, but if normal motion of the vertebra of the spine is restricted or decreased (this is what we call a subluxation), it can cause inhibition of the spinal nerves that exit between the vertebra and interfere with the nervous systems ability to function properly. A chiropractic adjustment restores proper motion of the joints of the spine, reduces the interference of the nervous system, and engages the body’s innate. Engage the body, engage the potential.
