When I was getting ready to get pregnant, my best friend was diagnosed with infertility.

We did an IUI just days apart from each other. I got pregnant and she did not.

We had lots of conversations leading up to this time about how she wanted to receive the news and boundaries she may need if I got pregnant and she didn’t.

There was some distance, but lots of grace and understanding. She even attended my birth 🩷

A few weeks after my wife and I experienced our stillbirth, this same best friend found out, against all odds, she was unexpectedly pregnant.

The conversations have continued, and through so much honesty and love we continue to be as close as ever and have an amazing friendship.

This post of information was inspired by our experience together. We collaborated on it and it reflects our thoughts, we can’t speak for everyone in this senario. I hope it’s helpful for friendships navigate this nuanced, tender, and beautiful time 🩷

Last week, my wife Amy gave birth to our stillborn son, Cedar

She was six months pregnant

This time feels incredibly private, and yet, we want our community to know our loss and begin to remember Cedar with us

Cedar was our son and he was loved by so many people

We are heartbroken beyond measure, our grief is immense

Our dear friend said to us that our grief is so big because our love is so big

Thank you for witnessing us during this difficult time

This fall, six months into my lease at the birth center, I was informed they would be selling my building

I looked into buying it, but if you know anything about TC property prices, you can guess that it was not something I was willing to do

I was told maybe the next owners would let me stay, but as you can imagine, to have safe place for people to birth, I can’t rely on a “maybe”

So the birth center is closing

I went though all the emotions- I was devastated, angry, sad, embarrassed, relieved, all of it

I know many other businesses in Traverse City, who succumbed to being priced out of their spaces, it’s a terrible feeling

So for now, no I am not looking for a new space

Yes I’m still attending births (on a limited basis) offering fertility services, and generally trying to burn down the patriarchal, oppressive systems that harm birthing people and families

Part two: BIRTH

An ENTIRE human emerges

They grow in such a mysterious way, always shrouded

Those of us who grow the babies, we know them

Not often consciously, but in a primal way, the only way that matters to a tiny newborn creature

And in the moment of their emergence everything else is suddenly revealed

A knowing, a recognition for those in the room

“It’s you!”

This mama herself is a birth photographer. So the morning she went into labor, I called my dear friend to see if she was up to attend her FIRST birth as a photographer- she was down. And dang, she delivered. What a talented human.

Welcome Charlotte 🍂💛🍂

Charlotte was born last week at the birth center, a few days before her due date and weighing in at an impressive 8 !

Her mama was amazing, patient and SO strong. She was intuitive when laboring and was completely undisturbed when she pushed her baby out, right into the hands of Charlie’s dad.

Now she’s home,nursing up a storm under the falling leaves of autumn 🍂

Welcome sweet baby Emrah 🍁♥️

This little earth angel decided coming 6 weeks early was a good idea, and it’s like he planned for it weighing almost SIX pounds and breathing, eating and doing all the baby things like he’s been around a thousand times before ⭐️

Emrahs Mommy and mama have become friends to me, as this is their second pregnancy and birth I’ve had the honor of attending for them 🌈

Emrah has been thriving at home with lots of love from his parents and big brother Ansah 🦋

So grateful to see this little muffin grow!

It’s always a great day to be born

In the morning during sunrise
At night under the stars
During rush hour traffic
On your birthday
The day after the day you wanted the baby to be born
On holidays
In snow storms

We all guess and hope
Trying to maintain some control over this wild event of birth

Please don’t be born on Election Day
Please meet our dog before he passes
I hope the baby is born on the weekend
On our anniversary
Not on a family members death date

I’ve seen more babies not born on a full moon, than on one
Every moon, every season, every day of the week, your baby will be right on time

Welcome baby Beckett!

I had the true honor of walking along side the most loving and grounded family during their journey to this new baby ♥️

Watching big brother grow and his vocabulary explode throughout the pregnancy.

Seeing dad so calm and attentive.

And this mama trusted herself and her ability to birth so fully, it was incredibly beautiful. She loves her littles big, it’s inspiring.
