Why do counselors recommend journaling? Most would say because it helps to shed light on your thoughts, feelings, and actions. I believe it helps with self awareness or getting to know yourself better. But mostly, it is about making information and experience personal to you. Journal about the Who, What, Why, Where and When of something you have recently explored and see what you find out.

Magical Thinking is believing that "if" such and such happens "then" life will be better. For example: IF I lose weight THEN I'll be happy. Life is put on hold not being lived to it's fullest in the moment. This type of thinking decreases happiness.
BUT, when "if-then" is used to achieve a goal it links the thought to actions making success more likely. IF I love myself as I am THEN I'll be happy in this moment.
