Celebrating Angie today as one of our Sacred Waters Collective Co-Founders!

We are honored to work alongside Angie Sanchez, ILC, IFSD, MBA (soon-to-be PhD) - an advocate, educator, and Co-founder of Sacred Waters Collective. 🌿

Angie’s work honors the connection between healing, bodyfeeding, and restoring Indigenous traditions. Through her leadership, she uplifts families and helps reclaim practices that center wellness, community, and support. 🌸

Angie shares, “Breastfeeding my son was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. At the same time, it was the single most healing thing I have ever done for myself. I do this work because I want to help others heal in the same way; this work is undoing hundreds of years of cultural genocide being committed against Indigenous people one baby and mama at a time. It is healing hundreds of years of generational trauma one family at a time.” 💛

Sacred Waters Collective sends a warm Miigwech (Thank You!) to the Regions 2 & 3 Perinatal Quality Collaborative of MI!

As a result of their Community Partnership Grant, our team recieved over $6600 in supplies to aid in our upcoming trainings for coming years! The items included: anatomical training models, classroom and office supplies, as well as video and photo equipment to document this historical upbringing. We'll also supply new doulas with items to support their mental health in their practice! With these supplies we welcome the opportunity to take our trainings to the next level, empowering healthy, grounded, birthing experiences for Indigenous people in our state.

Our trainings directly serve Indigenous communities and we are steadfast in providing trained doula support to birthing people. These funds directly support our mission! Thank you to all involved in helping us to make this happen. We are grateful for your support! ❤️ Take a moment to celebrate with us! 🎉

✨ Spotlight: Angie Sanchez – Advancing Indigenous Women-Centred HIV & STBBI Wellness ✨

We are so proud to showcase the work of our summer research intern in the Roots to Wellness Research Collaboratory, Angie Sanchez. 🌿

Through the 2025 Women-Centred HIV Care (WCHC) Hub Summer Research Internship, Angie—an Indigenous PhD student in medical geography—is leading innovative work that bridges Indigenous knowledge, maternal health, and HIV care.

Guided by Dr. JoLee Sasakamoose who leads the National Indigenous WCHC Sub-Hub and Saskatchewan WCHC Sub-Hub, Angie’s internship focuses on revitalizing traditional breastfeeding practices while ensuring culturally safe, evidence-based care for Indigenous mothers living with HIV.

🌿 Highlights of Angie’s work include:

A Cultural Safety in Breastfeeding Care module for Indigenous mothers with HIV

A webinar on Traditional Knowledge & Harm Reduction in HIV and Infant Feeding

A pocket guide for women with HIV who choose to breastfeed

Her work addresses the impacts of colonization, systemic racism, and trauma on maternal health, while offering informed choices that honor both traditional knowledge and modern healthcare.

📣 Stay tuned for an upcoming virtual knowledge-sharing event this fall, where Angie and the team will share these new resources with communities and healthcare providers across Canada.

📬 You’ll also find Angie’s full spotlight feature in the WCHC Hub newsletter. Not signed up yet? Join WCHC’S mailing list today to stay connected with the latest research, stories, and events.

✨ Home Birth in Kanehsatà:ke 🌙

In the early hours of August 19th at 12:47 am we had the immense honour of holding space for a home birth and welcoming a healthy baby boy into the world in the Tekontateriéntare Multigenerational Center for Women’s Wellness on Tsontkwahtentionhátie farm with the help of the midwives from the Blainville birthing center and our dedicated community birth keepers.

This marks the first home birth in Kanehsatà:ke in over 50 years. This is HUGE. Niawen’kò:wa to the family for believing in the vision of bringing birth home and the importance of women-centered care.

From the observant alpacas to the visiting turkeys, the curious skunk and the watchful deer, it seemed all of creation held its breath while Ís:ta did BIG work bringing baby earth side. It was an incredible experience that we’ll never forget and we hope to provide for many more families moving forward.

Our hearts are so full. Niá:wen. Niá:wen. Niá:wen!
