Our Story
- Total length: 130 feet - Width: 3 feet - Color: bright red - Medium: Cotton/Synthetic blend felt fabric; metallic silver & gold and white via paint-pen, black marker, opalescent glitter, glittery fabric paint, mirror pieces. - Embellishment: Various and random as space allows, on both sides--messages, artwork and names of individuals lost to AIDS or lived as HIV+ and died of other causes. Signed blessings, prayers and messages featured on the Ribbon have been entered by notable community leaders, media personalities, elected officials, celebrities and clergy, spiritual and faith leaders. But most are entered on the Memorial by regular, every day folks who grieve for their loved one or for someone who touched their life only to be taken by HIV/AIDS.
With the death toll from this disease estimated to be more than 40 million men, women and children so far since its discovery in June 1981, and over one million deaths Worldwide each year added to that total, we have a huge number of loved ones left to pick up the pieces when death comes from this cureless viral killer. That’s why AIDS Ribbon Tucson was created and why it serves a huge community as an “interactive” public AIDS Memorial. It’s for all of us left behind to put pen to the fabric and remember THEM. Create some closure from the sorrow, loss and pain. Write and draw your tears away and remember THEM fondly, humorously, fiercely, lovingly and eternally.
