Redefining Ability

•How We Started•

Inspired by Matthew Sanford and his work with yoga, despite having a spinal cord injury, Jessica Stebbins wanted to create an opportunity for others to take adaptive yoga classes here at The University of Arizona. Her plan was to work on a program plan that would eventually bring this service to the U of A community through the Rec Center. After attending a yoga class, group members from a project she was working with learned of her dream. They felt the need to continue on her work and complete it, as Jessica would have done. Today, a club has been created, Yoga For Disabilities, and members have undergone training to begin what she was hoping to start Spring 2013 at the Rec Center.

•Our Mission Statement•

Our Mission is to reach out to people with physical disabilities and to provide assistance and support in an effort to explore the practice of yoga by understanding the mind body connection redefining ability.

A beautiful moment: The man in the red shirt before this day had only been transferred to the ground twice since his spinal cord injury. The grounding assistants surrounding him practiced floor transfers for hours at my house & studio. Thanks to their hard work, he then had the opportunity to practice yoga on the ground alongside his sister (beside him in the picture) just like Every body else. After his yoga practice he said, 'does someone have a camera' -Elizabeth Brewer

Last night we had the pleasure of having Dr. Brewer, medical director at Canyon Ranch Health Resort, as a special guest. He educated us on rheumatologic diseases and how we can make yoga a safe and comfortable experience for people with rheumatologic diseases.
