My name is Jennifer Torres. My Mexhica name is Chiquacen Teocuitlatl Cuauhtli. I am a member of the Kalpulli Teocalli Ollin and a student of curanderismo learning the Mexhica ways of Abuelita Casimira Rocha y Sanchez and Maestra CC through Maestra Paula Leeper and Maestro D’Santi Nava. I am the great-great-granddaughter of Stella Edna Reeves. The great-granddaughter of Jewel Farmer, Herbert Ulshoffer, Rose Wesson, Robert Billingsley, Marcos Mendoza, Francisca Zubiate, Maria Magdalena Tarango and Placido Torres. I am the granddaughter of Shirley Ulshoffer, Howard Billingsley, Juana Mendoza and Anselmo Torres. I am the daughter of Sandra Billingsley and Ramon Torres. I am a bonus mom to 2 amazing young women and a biological mom to 2 brilliant boys. I am the wife to Matthew Lawrence who I met on the salsa/bachata dance floor and will forever be known to me as Mateo. I am a sister, a tia, a friend and a caretaker. I was drawn to the medicine of human touch at a young age and pursued it as a career after graduating from the Desert Institute of the Healing Arts in Massage Therapy in 2001. After dealing with a lot of imposter syndrome and feeling like the methods of massage I was taught didn’t feel like me I left the field of bodywork and let my national license lapse. Instead of bodywork I supported myself by working in various fields like the restaurant industry, preschool, care providing and case management for people with developmental disabilities, group exercise and event management. I learned so much about my community working in those various fields and through them I am making my way back to bodywork. This time I will be incorporating more of my ancestral ways into my work, making it feel more authentically me. My Arizona state massage therapy license is currently pending and should go into effect in December. Once my license is active I will be officially offering bodywork to my community once again. In the meantime I am offering limpias free of charge as I continue to step into my medicine.
Keep an eye out for future community offerings.
