SLPs and parents! If your child has a speech sound error that makes it hard to say their name clearly, consider focusing on their name as a target before school starts. Being able to introduce themselves to teachers and other students is such a great confidence booster to start the school year. Maybe you're focusing on different sounds right now-consider a pause to focus on the components to say their name. I can't promise it will be easy, but it will be worth it.

Play is so important for kids. It helps build cognitive skills, emotional regulation, language skills and parental bonding. I could go on and on. Enjoy your title as your child's most preferred playmate while it lasts, it goes by so fast.

SLPs have a lot of knowledge about speech, language and cognitive development. That knowledge should be shared as a resource to help parents enrich their child’s development in these areas. Ultimately though it is the parent’s choice to select what works best for their family and how to integrate that into their daily routine.

Most 3 year olds are 75% intelligible to an unfamiliar listener. Parents adjust to their children’s speech patterns and usually understand their kids better than a stranger. If you’re having trouble understanding your 3 year old, it’s a good time to get it checked out!

A tip to help you with carryover!! This is also super helpful for helping kids learn sound recognition (phonology) which is a key skill for reading.
