Oscar's Little Leg

Oscar was born with a rare leg deformity called PFFD (Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency) and FH (Fib The cause is undetermined at this time.

PFFD in a congenital (non-genetic) birth defect that affect 1 in 50,000 children. It occurs in utero when the limb buds are forming, usually around the 5th - 7th week of pregnancy. It effects the formation of the pelvis and visually presents with a shorten femur bone. It can range from being a few inches shorter to a totally absent femur bone. In Oscar's case it is significantly shorter (about 40% the length of a typical femur). It commonly occurs with FH or Fibular Hemimelia (absence or shortening of the fibula bone). It can affect the length of the tibia, the kneecap, the foot, and the joints and ligaments in the leg. Oscar's right fibula is completely absent and his tibia is short and bowed. It is not clear how well his hip and other joints are affected as they are still developing at this young age. I also would like to raise awareness and connect with others who have gotten this diagnosis. Although PFFD is not what they wanted for their child, it does not effect the quality of life. Oscar will be having SUPER leg surgery on January 15, 2015. He cannot walk independently the way his leg is now. Local doctors cannot fix his leg and his case is fairly complicated. He will need to be in Florida for 2-3 weeks for the pre-op, surgery and recovery. Then we will need to return their for cast removal and physical therapy, that could another 2-3 weeks. The emotional and financial burden will be tremendous for our family of seven. If you'd like to help you can:

5th grade day! Oscar had a rough patch with his surgeries this year so he is definitely due for some brighter days!

Gymnastics class! Oscar is getting as much fun in as possible before his surgery! Hopefully we will get him up and walking within a few weeks of his surgery but it will be much harder to get around with a femur/tibia fixator so we are getting extra fun in right now. Can't believe his surgery is in a little over 2 months. We are both nervous and excited.

Oscar before he had his super leg surgery! The very talented Jennifer Latham Robinson drew it for us. Oscar recognized himself immediately, he said "It's Oscar riding a dragon!"

Oscar modeling some of his altered clothes! He will have to wear his fixator for a minimum of 6 months (3 for lengthening, 3 for consolidation) so he'll need some cute clothes to wear.

Oscar grew out of his purple pylon and so now his leg is green. He is growing so fast. And he got a Winter book today!

I made some side snap underwear for Oscar to wear during his upcoming lengthening! He will have a medal frame around his right leg so I have to alter all his underwear, shorts/pants and bathing suits to accommodate for it. His surgery is 4.5 months away but I'm guessing it doesn't hurt to be prepared. Oscar got so excited when he saw these. Perfect underwear for Florida!
