We’re starting something new at our little corner of the cottage… a Hűgelkultur garden 🌿
If you’ve never heard of it, Hűgelkultur (a German word meaning “mound culture”) is a way of building a garden bed using logs, branches, leaves, compost, and soil — mimicking the way a forest floor naturally builds rich, living earth over time.
Instead of hauling things away, we layer them back into the land. The wood slowly breaks down, holding moisture like a sponge, feeding the soil, and creating a thriving home for microbes, worms, and roots. It’s slow, wise gardening — the kind that teaches patience and trust.
We’re doing this because we want to grow more than just herbs and food… we want to grow resilience, connection, and a deeper understanding of how nature provides when we care for her well.
It’s a reminder that what looks like “waste” can become nourishment. That decay is part of creation. That tending the earth is also a way of tending ourselves.
I’m excited to plant medicinal herbs, flowers for the pollinators, and maybe a few surprises — and to let the kids get their hands in the soil and watch the magic unfold season by season.
Here’s to building soil, honoring the cycles, and creating a little ecosystem right here at home 🌱
