Emails still accepted on Alabama Birth Center Policy!

📢📢📢We are in the FINAL DAYS for submitting public comments regarding ADPH's proposed birth center rules 420-5-13.

As written these rules will virtually ❌ ELIMINATE ❌ the option for birth centers in Alabama, which is their intention. It is so important for our voices to be heard. Please send an email in opposition of the proposed rules before THIS Friday (August 4th) at 5pm.

📧Email: denise.milledge@adph.state.al.us

A brief email introducing yourself, stating why you support birth centers in Alabama, and how these rules are overly restrictive and not grounded in current evidence will do it! You can also demand that they scrap these rules and consult midwives and other experienced professionals in the drafting of new regulations.

‼ Key Issues with proposed rules:

➡️1. Licensed midwives with the CPM credential are restricted from serving as a primary care provider in a state which ALREADY LICENSES midwives and permits us to provide care in a home (out-of-hospital) birth setting.
➡️2. Unnecessary physical facility requirements increase costs.
➡️3. Physician supervision and RN staffing requirements increase costs, and create staffing issues.
➡️4. A written transfer agreement requirement allows a hospital to block the opening of a birth center, which is its economic competitor. EMTALA law already makes it so that hospitals cannot deny any person seeking medical care.
➡️5. The “Low Risk Patient” qualifications are overly restrictive, thus limiting the number of women who qualify for birth center care.

💗🐣 Please take a moment to send an email today and help improve birth in Alabama 🐣💗

And Yes I Doula Too!

When I was 6 months pregnant with my sixth child my sister in law asked me to attend her birth and be her Midwife. “You know how to do that right?” she asked. We had long conversations about what she was asking and what I knew and understood.

In Ina Mae Gaskins book Spiritual Midwifery , she lays out several compelling points about why birth needed to return to the realm of mothers instead of doctors. She is famous for created a Birthing Farm where women learn midwifery and give birth naturally but I didn’t know that at the time. What I knew was that her words resonated with me especially in light of a half and half split between home births and hospital births with my home experiences winning the popularity contest hands down. I also knew that my ancestors indigenous to Africa and The Americas had given birth successfully without western medial methods.
