A sneak peak into our exploration of Peru 🇵🇪 with .roe and .proclimber! Nothing like the Andes and some good old high altitude archeology.

In 2018, Felipe Proano was attempting various first ascents in the Cordillera Blanca range in the heart of the Andes in Peru. During his time in this area, he discovered more than just beautiful aesthetic climbing, stunning white-capped to blue-grey mountain walls sliding into a beige valley floor beheld. Truly a climber’s paradise!
Upon a haphazard glance, climbing many feet above the valley floor, Felipe noticed line patterns in the basin that appeared to be perfectly straight. A perspective that would unlock what has now become known as the Canals of Rurec.
After some research, the team discovered these ruins dated back before the Spanish conquest and possibly even older cultures than the Incans.
In May 2021,
Felipe and Austin O’Brien return to the Rurec Valley with Western Colorado University interns to collect data on the area.

In 2022 an expedition was put together with students from and to continue gathering data and extend the reach of scientific research.

Finally in 2023 we once again returned to Peru in order to view this landscape through the lens of science and wonder. The team collected hundreds of data points and fewer understanding of what would have looked like in these Andean Valleys thousands of years ago! 🤩

In honor of our Peru expedition with .roe! The beauty of the Peruvian Andes is breath taking - literally. The mountains here start higher than the tallest peaks in the continental US. The rugged landscape means big efforts to move across small areas, resulting in the region being mostly unstudied under the lens of archeological significance. So to combat that, we’ve teamed up with .roe and professor to explore these mysterious and scenic landscapes. What will the team find this year? You’ll have to stay tuned to find out!
