Adam is a bright and talented young man who was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare form of leukemia (only four cases have been recorded worldwide). He was diagnosed less than two weeks after his graduation from Lakes High School, and had been planning to attend UW Tacoma this fall to study physical therapy. That has now been postponed for at least a year while he is in treatment. After his initial admittance, Adam spent 46 days at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. Eight days after he was diagnosed, he went into septic shock from having numerous infections and complications from chemotherapy. He is finally recovering at home in Lakewood, but will soon be relocating to Seattle Children's Hospital for further treatment. Luckily, a bone marrow donor has been found for Adam, but he and his parents will need to live very close to Children's Hospital for the transplant and following chemotherapy. He will need full body radiation as well as chemotherapy prior to the transplant. He will then need to spend a minimum of 100 days in the hospital after the transplant, and then will need to stay in a clean house with infection protocols within 30 minutes' drive from the hospital. He and his parents will need to stay there until he is considered stable from rejecting the bone marrow, which will likely be another several months. Because of the challenges presented by the type of leukemia he has and his previous struggles with treatment, the transplant team is expecting this to be a longer recovery than usual. As of August, we are hoping that Adam can get the transplant in as little as six weeks (assuming his next bone marrow biopsy allows for it and his infections are under control). Jeff and Elyna, Adam's parents, have stayed by his side throughout this entire ordeal. They are fortunate enough to have had an anonymous donor help with Adam's medical bills from Mary Bridge, but this donor will not be following them to Seattle Children's Hospital. They have had to drastically reduce their working hours in order to provide Adam with the home care he needs, and will have to stop working entirely when the family relocates to Seattle. Please join us in praying for Adam and his family, and please donate what you can so that his parents can continue to stay by his side. Anything and everything helps!
