A step forward. "The Catholic Bishops of Canada express our profound remorse and apologize unequivocally," says the statement. Yet falls short of the TRC call to action for the Pope himself to apologize in Canada.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a public apology to Indigenous people in Canada for the suffering endured at residential schools and says it will continue providing records to identify Indigenous children buried in unmarked graves.

More satisfying than facts and figures is key narrative information about your family’s history, which is also the history of places, times and events. Our genealogists love to tell a story!⁣

As client Cathy notes: “If you truly want to find out about your family’s story, not just about their birthdays, deaths etc., but how they lived, then these are the people to go to. I really got a sense of who my Granny was and how she lived before she met my Grandfather. They also gave me tools to continue my search.”⁣

How do we build a picture of your past? First we look at original sources - health records, property deeds, logsheets, birth certificates and obituaries. Then we use secondary sources and scholarly analysis to assemble an illustration of the lives of the people that came before you. ⁣

Full-service genealogists begin with a consultation to get to know you and determine your objectives. From there we cater to your unique background and familial lineages, bringing you a full portrait that fills in oral histories. ⁣

Let us paint you a picture!⁣

August 26 marks Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the passing of the 19th amendment in the U.S. The law prohibits states and the federal government from denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of s*x. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Passed in 1920, the amendment impacted the lives of women only a few generations up on your tree. Finding connections to this piece of women’s history makes studying your family’s branches all the more meaningful. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
While the amendment was a ground-breaking piece of legislation, its practice has not been so simple. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of colour) and trans women have often been barred from exercising their legal right to vote in local and federal elections. Systemic voter discrimination is exercised through citizenship and Jim Crow laws, literacy testing, ID requirements, gerrymandering, incarceration and poll taxes. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It’s important to remember the 19th amendment was mostly accessed by white women, particularly before the 1965 Voting Rights Act was passed. It is thanks to the work of BIPOC suffragettes, clubwomen and activists that we understand the ways voting is linked to economic, social and geographical issues, as well as s*x and gender.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So, while this is a day of celebration, it is also an acknowledgement of the continued fight of feminist movements worldwide. We’re reminded that equity is a tangible practice, history isn’t always contained in books, and the real stories of our most inspiring movements are often those told to us by our grandmothers and elders, not to mention those tiny breadcrumbs we find on our trees! ⁣⁣
