September is NICU Awareness Month

Project NICU is proud to join with communities around the world this September to honor and raise awareness for the tiniest and most medically fragile babies, their families, and the dedicated NICU teams who care for them.

Did you know that 1 in 10 babies will spend time in the NICU? The NICU does not discriminate! Tt can impact any family, at any time. That’s why awareness, advocacy, and support are so important.

This month, we’ll recognize, celebrate, honor, remember, and connect with so many who share this space.

Im so thankful to my amazing husband Thomas Gary for supporting me in furthering my experience and education in the birthwork field.
I started my breastfeeding/infant feeding edcuation this week. In the next year or year in half, I hope to sit for the IBCLC exam 🥳

Developed by Yale Nurse Midwifery Professor, Carol Wood Nichols in 1985, it seems to be more accurate than the standard (and dated) Naegele method of calculating EDD.

Dr. Franz Naegele, a German obstetrician, devised this widely used formula in the 1800s. It’s based on a 28-day cycle and is less accurate if the cycle is longer or shorter. It also fails to take into account gravid history.

All methods to calculate due date still fail to account for genetic variation, lifestyle, health status and other variables, but we at believe this method gets us closer to accurate, especially if combined with good history taking.

An accurate due date is a critical tool for informed decision making and we also support ordering a dating ultrasound when dating is unavailable or doesn’t match up with size.

And lastly, remember for defensive charting, it’s never appropriate to CHANGE A DUE DATE, after a second visit or 20 weeks, whichever comes later, so do your due diligence and get an accurate date asap!
