Short, terrific TED Talk: How to Build (and Rebuild) Trust: Authenticity, Rigor in Our Logic, and Empathy

Trust is the foundation for everything we do. But what do we do when it's broken? In an eye-opening talk, Harvard Business School professor Frances Frei gives a crash course in trust: how to build it, maintain it and rebuild it -- something she worked on during a recent stint at Uber. "If we can lea...

This interview with Dave Joseph is filled with rich wisdom for us all based on his lifetime of inviting people worldwide to connect via dialogue. Dave was a dear friend, colleague, and mentor at Essential Partners. He passed away at the end of Oct. We celebrated his life last Saturday. His friendship, teaching and insights carry us forward. 51 minutes of pure gems. (Interview link is at the end of the article.)

A tribute to a friend, teacher, and mentor to many young dialogue practitioners—including myself. Dave passed away October 25, 2021, and was memorialized this last weekend in Rhode Island.

I’m reading Sue Monk Kidd’s “The Book of Longings”. Only on page 41, already she stirs these questions: 1) How often do we think we are betrothed to a particular life that feels ‘appropriate or beneficial’? What cost is it to succumb to or decry such perceived fate? 2) Are our visions, dreams, inklings of being gifted themselves a promise that we are indeed such? Or do we require that Life prove itself long before we give of ourselves . . . and in doing so we miss the gift that was always here and offered without requirement? Gift given, received, shared, enjoyed. Period. No promises required. Is this itself Love? And then, of course, the power of being supported sensitively through our days of doubt to discovery.

With millions vaccinated, we have begun to imagine what's next. For some, the return to work and school will be a relief. For others, it brings a new wave of anxieties. Here are steps to navigating the change.

In addition to my work as a therapist and coach, I do training and consulting work for Essential Partners (EP), a nonprofit that equips people to live and work better together in community by building trust and understanding across differences.

Using EP's approach, communities become more cohesive and less polarized. Students become more open-minded and less quick to judge. Workplaces become more collaborative and creative. As part of diversity initiatives, it offers practical techniques to actually build more intentional, inclusive institutional cultures. EP helps people realize that our differences are strengths when we can navigate them with grace, together.

Clearly, I am inspired by this organization's work and mission. That's why I'm inviting you to join a new free webinar, which gives you a small taste of the work and helps you imagine what could be possible in your own context.

Founded in 1989, Essential Partners equips people to live and work better together by building trust and understanding across differences. But, what exactly does that mean?
