Ryan Ervin is our guest this Friday. This is going to be a combo show of PsychoBabble on WXNA and Eighties/Schmeighties on WXNA.

Ryan and I are both Robert Pollard and Guided By Voices fanatics. And we are both convinced that there is something about Bob's lyrics and music that relate to mental health and social well-being. And we're going to talk about it. Tune in if you're a GbV fan and tune in if you want to become a GbV fan 🙂

The Club Is Open!

Nashville native Ryan Ervin is a lifelong music hobbyist. He's been playing in original local bands (The Carter Administration, Spider Virus, Century Club, Hands Down Eugene) for over 30 years. His current band, The Criminal Kind, started out as a Tom Petty tribute band, morphed into an original music project, and also moonlight as Mute Superstars, a tribute to the music of Robert Pollard and Guided by Voices. Ryan has been married to his lovely wife, Jennifer, for 23 years. They have a 13 year old daughter, Amelia. If you want to get stuck in an hours-long conversation with him, ask him what he thinks about Bob Pollard and Guided by Voices.

Please join us this coming Friday at noon on WXNA, as Amanda sits down with Theeda Murphy to discuss how and why the murder of Charlie Kirk has been deliberately used to distort and sanitize his life and legacy. They will discuss how even liberal commentators contributed to this dynamic, which is attempting to erase the real harm he did to marginalized communities, especially black people, immigrants, and trans folks.

Theeda is an activist, counselor, and dreamer. She was born in Chicago in the Sixties and her earliest memories are of rallies, marches, and community advocacy. She is a proud product of Oakwood University and Fisk University, both Historically Black Universities. Her experiences working as a crisis counselor in community mental health has given her a deep understanding of the mental health delivery system and the unsung heroes who are dedicated to helping the most vulnerable in our society. She is currently working as the Lead Organizer of AbolitionWorksTN, where she uses all of her knowledge and skills toward abolishing the carceral state and healing the harm it has caused.

Very excited to have chaplain. Dahron Johnson return as a guest tomorrow. She is a living example of optimism and hope despite the times. Tune-in 12:00 noon tomorrow. Only at WXNA wxnafm.org.

Dahron Johnson, a clinically-trained chaplain, serves as the Bereavement Coordinator for a hospice serving middle Tennessee, advocating for equity & flourishing across multiple communities—efforts recognized earlier this year by her work’s Diversity Champion award. Outside this space, Dahron is co-chair of the Nashville Committee of the Tennessee Equality Project—a statewide legislative advocacy organization for LGBTQIA+ Tennesseans—as well as serving on the community advisory council for the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center. She has been a member of the institutional review board for human subject research for the VA’s middle-TN health system for over 15 years, and also serves as the Secretary on the Metro Nashville & Davidson County’s Title VI anti-discrimination body, the Metro Human Relations Commission. Regardless of location, Chaplain Johnson advocates persistently for keeping the voices of those with whom she works central to their own journeys.

Tomorrow on PsychoBabble I'll be chatting with Amy Ridings LPC-MHSP and returning guest Melissa Crim M.Ed., LPC-MHSP. We'll be processing our experiences as therapists in the midst of rising authoritarianism and fascist vibes.

Before becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC-MHSP), Amy worked as a Legislative Aide in Congress and as the Legislative Director for the American Humane Association. She got to Capitol Hill via an undergraduate degree in International Relations with minors in German and History, interning at the Tennessee State Legislature as well as working on a Congressional Political Campaign.

After having her second child (and WAY too many pets!), Amy switched gears and moved into the healing field as a mental health therapist. She has been able to integrate the 2 worlds of politics and therapy via a lens of working with clients to figure out what is the motivation underneath the behaviors, what are the core values at play, and how to communicate more effectively. Her work at the American Humane Association also dovetailed with her interest in political systems because it evaluated the roots of violence and lack of empathy and how that manifests systemically.

A Nashville-based clinician since earning her M.Ed. at Vanderbilt University (1992), Melissa Crim is an NBCC-approved continuing-education provider, offering workshops and trainings nationwide and holds licenses in eight states. Her forthcoming book, The Wild Edges of Grief – Wandering the Terrain of Love and Loss, arrives later this fall. Melissa brings radiance, rootedness, and deep care to her work with clients, groups, and communities. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, she is especially attuned to supporting those reconstructing beliefs and identities after harmful religious systems or difficult family dynamics. She supports LGBTQIA+ clients, people healing from religious trauma, and anyone navigating grief, estrangement, identity shifts, or major life decisions. Her work moves between the therapeutic, the creative, and the esoteric. Through her Wild and Wise framework, she invites people to reclaim their untamed selves while drawing on elemental wisdom—earth, air, fire, and water—as companions for healing and transformation.

Shaped by a lifelong kinship with the natural world, she finds solace in forests, rivers, and mossy paths; in the steady rhythm of paddle boarding; in singing and dancing; and in gathering with loved ones. She lives in Nashville with her partner, her 18-year-old son, Hope the Doberman, Lola Winifred Pants the chihuahua, and Van Halen the beloved bearded dragon.
