🚨SIDS RESEARCH 🚨

PLEASE understand that while a correlation has been made regarding SIDS deaths and enzymes in the infant’s blood, there were extreme limiting factors in this study.

While it definitely is a step in the right direction, it has not been deemed an exact cause.
There is currently no way to test your baby for this enzyme.

AND IT DOES NOT CHANGE SAFE SLEEP RULES.

Suffocation is still a great risk, asphyxiation is still a great risk, strangulation and entrapments are still great risks.

Place your baby, on their back, in their bassinet/crib/pnp, with nothing but a paci if needed.

Babies who die while cosleeping rarely die of SIDS or SUIDS, they die from the tragedies I listed above.

IM GOING TO NURSING SCHOOL!!!! 👩‍⚕️
I’ve been waiting for the acceptance letter before posting anything (obviously) and now it’s OFFICIAL.
Utz Doula Services will no longer be taking clients with EDD’s past mid-July, but we will continue to offer personalized Childbirth Education.
I have some other things in the works, that I am excited to share soon enough. I love working with the pregnant and mama community of Valdosta and I don’t plan to stop while I get my BSN.
This is only the beginning for Utz Doula Services. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll upgrade to Utz Midwifery Services 😉

Just popping in with a real-life-motherhood picture after a snuggly nap with my girl.

We’ve been going through it lately & I’ve taken a step back from my social media obligations.

Some things are in the works that I hope to announce soon 🤞🏼

We also have an MRI scheduled for my little bean, that will hopefully provide us a diagnoses once and for all.

As of now, I am only taking on clients that are due before August of 2022.
Scheduling CBE exams at anytime, and still offering our pregnancy package with Nomad Chiro.

Keep in touch, my friends.

I love you. You belong here.

🍕 If you had or plan to have a hospital birth, you probably have heard the rule that you can’t eat anything once in labor.

🍔 This rule was set based off of old (1994), and much more dangerous anesthesia. As we know, western medicine has come a long way in the last 27 years. Then, aspiration was an incredible issue during surgery under general anasthesia, and could result in infection and possibly death.

🌮 In 2021, general anesthesia during labor is only given in the event of an emergency cesarean, if the patient does not already have an epidural placed.

🌯 It has been found that food consumption during labor can shorten labor by close to 20 minutes. Additionally, higher maternal satisfaction rate is reported by those allowed solid food throughout the labor process vs those only allowed water and ice (97% vs 55%).

🍩 In the UK, where birthing parents are encouraged to eat and drink as they please during the labor process; there was only one aspiration related death in over 6 million births between 2000 and 2008.

🌭 Finally, hospital policy does not bind patients and they do not have the legal authority to prevent patients from eating and drinking. So eat that hamburger, and see the link below for more information!

As new information is coming out about Tricare and Doula coverage, we want to make sure everyone is referencing the actual source. While the information on the Federal Register provides some insight, further details will be published by the DHA on implementation of the demonstration in the TRICARE manuals.

In the meantime, you can reference and read more about the requirements for doulas through the link below.

As promised, here is the most recent update from TriCare regarding the Doula Demonstration beginning next year! It is a lot of information, I have done my best to summarize it below.

This demo recognizes the benefits a Doula can have both emotionally and physically for a pregnant person, their family, and their birth outcomes. It will begin 1 January 2022 and continue for 5 years. When those 5 years are up, the program will be re-evaluated.

TriCare Prime and TriCare Select beneficiaries who are currently stationed in the Continental United States are eligible for Labor Support and Lactation Consultations. Beneficiaries must be 20+ weeks pregnant and must plan to deliver the baby with a TriCare authorized provider, with emergency cases possibly being an exception. This includes home-births, birth center births, and hospital births! **I am looking for clarification but the website reads as if the member must be delivering OFF BASE and not in an MTF**

The Doula may charge TriCare directly, or the beneficiary may pay out of pocket and then file for a reimbursement. The coverage will include 6 (total) prenatal and postpartum meetings (max charge of $46 each) and 1 event of continuous labor support (max charge of $690).

Of course, TriCare has set some prerequisites for Doulas before they are able to become TriCare approved:
- Certified with a TriCare approved organization
- Attend a minimum of 24 hours of training that meets TriCare regulations
- Attend a breastfeeding course
- Attend a Childbirth Education Course
- Have attended minimum of 3 births, in the last 3 years. 2 of them must be vaginal births.
- Provide prenatal and postpartum support for at least 1 family in the last 3 years.
- Infant, child, and adult CPR Certification
- License or certification for applicable states
- NPI number

At this time, Utz Doula Services is not eligible for TriCare coverage and we are evaluating what this means for our business, our clients, and a way ahead.

Please see the below link or reach out if you have any questions or are looking for other details. We will continue to keep you all updated as the program evolves!

At Utz Doula Services, we are committed to sharing evidence based information with our clients. With that being said, we are starting a new series called Myth 🆚 Fact!

I often see posts comparing a newborn stomach to a cherry and warning against overfeeding as it will “stretch out” the baby’s stomach. 🍒

The reality is, this is outdated and false information that can also turn dangerous. ⚠️

In the NICU, full term babies are fed based on their weight. A 6.6 lb baby needs 2-3 oz of breastmilk or formula every 2-3 hours. 🍼

Babies should be fed on demand, until they are satisfied. If you are worried if they are getting enough, pay attention to their wet and dirty diaper output. 💩

A baby’s belly is meant to stretch, just like adults. Babies will rest better, regulate their blood sugar easier, and return to birth weight faster when they are receiving an adequate amount of milk. 👩‍🍼

You might recall my post regarding the FDA warning letter being sent to Owlet regarding the SmartSock. Owlet has announced that they will no longer be selling the SmartSock and plan to work towards FDA approval.

If you have an Owlet SmartSock, I encourage you to reach out to the company for a refund of some sort!

These things don’t prevent SIDS, they have burned babies, and they have extremely low levels before even alerting IF they alert.

Remember that the ABCs of Safe Sleep are the safest option for infant sleep; ALONE on their BACK in the CRIB (bassinet and packnplay are also safe).

Owlet received a Warning Letter from the FDA regarding the Smart Sock’s regulatory status in the United States. The letter we received from the agency did not identify any safety concerns about the Smart Sock; rather, the FDA asserts that the Smart Sock should be classified as a medical device in ...
