Cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder. With advances in technology in the field of surgery, this procedure can now be done using a minimally invasive technique called laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

While the more traditional open surgical procedure required a long incision to be made in the abdominal region, laparoscopic surgery is conducted using one or more tiny incisions. There is no cutting into the abdominal muscles so there is a big decrease in post-op pain, scarring, and recovery.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery If you have had problems with gallstones or other gallbladder conditions, you may need a cholecystectomy or surgical removal of your gallbladder. Not too long ago, this meant major surgery, with time in the hospital to recover. … Continue reading →

An ever-growing number of Americans are struggling with obesity. If you're one of these individuals, you know that there's no easy fix for this problem. Conventional wisdom for losing weight has been to eat less and exercise more.

But, what it that hasn't worked for you? Being obese can have some really severe and long-lasting impacts on your health and the overall quality of your life. Weight loss surgery may be a great option for you.

At Advanced Surgical Associates, we offer support groups for patients who are considering weight loss surgery as well as support groups for our post-surgical patients.

At our support groups, we'll discuss the various weight loss surgical options so that you can decide which one, if any, is the right option for you. In addition, we provide weight loss surgery informational and nutritional seminars for our patients.

Abdominoplasty or "tummy tuck" surgery is a surgical procedure done to remove excess fat and skin, and in many cases, also helps to restore muscles that have become weakened and separated.

One of the most common causes of a loose or sagging abdomen is weight loss surgery. Many patients elect to have abdominoplasty to improve their body image and to prevent irritation and skin infections that can arise from having a lot of excess skin after the weight loss surgery.

Areas that can be treated with tummy tuck surgery include your lower abdomen and can extend around the sides up to the rib cage and to the p***c bone.

Vascular conditions that can have a potentially serious effect on your overall health include carotid artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease as well as peripheral venous disease and varicose veins.

Traditionally, surgical intervention for many of these conditions has involved open surgical procedures. However, today's vascular surgeons have another option - minimally invasive laparoscopic endovascular surgery. Examples of this type of procedure are endovascular angioplasty and stent procedures.

The benefits to this type of surgery are fewer, smaller incisions with less scarring, pain, and recovery time.

Minimally invasive endovascular procedures have the advantage of being fast procedures resulting in minimal downtime and faster rates of recovery.

Changes in diet or medications, and stress can result in digestive issues. The symptoms can be annoying, but usually resolve themselves over the course of a few days or weeks.

However, there are some symptoms that shouldn't be ignored such as unexplained weight loss along with abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits. If these symptoms are present, your doctor will more than likely recommend having a colonoscopy.

A colonoscopy is not only a good diagnostic tool, but can help catch colorectal cancer in the early stages when it best responds to treatment.

The American Cancer Society recommends that people at average risk for developing colorectal cancer get their first screening at age 50 to help prevent colon cancer.

If you ask a 50 year old how he or she feels about reaching that milestone, you’re likely to hear that they feel younger than their age. The challenge is to ensure that their 50 year old body stays in good shape as they move forward into the decades ahead.

Preventative care is an important aspect of healthcare, in general, for people over 50. Whether you’re a 50 year old man or woman, there are simple tests that your doctor should recommend to help maintain your health and overall quality of life as you move forward into the decades ahead.

In addition to a general exam with your GP to establish your health baseline, colon cancer screening is strongly recommended for people over the age of 50.

Preventative care for people over 50 should include colon cancer screening. Colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S.

It’s normal to experience thyroid changes as you age, but sometimes the changes cannot be attributed to age alone.
If you’re struggling more than ever with your weight and are having other symptoms such as fatigue after a good night’s sleep, hair loss, mood swings, constipation, and others, you may actually have thyroid disease.

Many men and women develop hypothyroidism as they age which means that the thyroid is underactive . Your doctor will most likely prescribe medication to stimulate your thyroid. However, you may still find yourself fighting a losing battle with weight gain.

There are surgical options if you're suffering from persistent weight gain brought on by hypothyroidism.

The CDC estimates that more than 30% of all adults in America are obese. While traditional weight loss methods such as a low-cal diet and regular exercise are effective for some people when it comes to losing weight, weight loss surgery may be the best option for many struggling with obesity.

LAP-BAND surgery is one surgical option. It's the probably the easiest type of weight loss surgery, it's reversible, and it costs less than other surgical procedures.

An inguinal hernia occurs when soft tissue, either part of an abdominal organ or intestine, protrudes through a weak area in your abdominal muscles. Some of the symptoms you may experience include a visible bulge in the lower abdomen, pain when lifting or exerting, and a burning sensation in the area of the bulge.

While hernias are not initially dangerous, they can worsen and lead to life-threatening problems and will most likely need to be repaired through surgery.

A relatively new option in the field of hernia surgery is single incision laparoscopic surgery or SLIS. This is a scarless procedure that potentially reduces pain and recovery time.

The job of the gallbladder is to store bile, a liquid produced by the liver that aids in the digestion of fats. When needed, the gallbladder releases bile into the upper part of your small intestine as part of the process of digestion. Your gallbladder is not an essential organ, and gallbladder removal will in no way interfere with healthy digestion.

Emergency gallbladder surgery or cholecystectomy may be indicated if you develop gallstones that block the bile or pancreatic duct or if your gallbladder ruptures. Laparoscopic surgery is the most common type of gallbladder removal surgery.
