For Justin Ricketts, February 23, 2024 started like any other workday at Glavan Ford...until something felt off.

“It felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest,” Justin recalled. Without the classic arm or shoulder pain often associated with heart attacks, he initially thought it might be indigestion or heartburn. A coworker quickly recognized something wasn’t right and encouraged him to seek emergency care.

Moments later, Justin broke out in a cold sweat. He and his coworker headed straight to the Emergency Room at Clay County Medical Center. Justin remembers making it to the entrance before collapsing nearby.

“That’s when one of the ER nurses, Brett Canfield, came out with a wheelchair and told me to get in,” Justin said.

From that moment on, everything moved quickly. Within seconds, Justin was receiving care in the CCMC Emergency Department. By early afternoon, he was being transported by helicopter to Salina for advanced cardiac care.

Later, Justin learned just how critical those first moments had been.

“The doctor in Salina told me the work done in the CCMC ER kept me from having a full heart attack,” he said. “If I had waited any longer, I wouldn’t be here.”

Justin credits the CCMC team not only for the immediate emergency response, but also for the support he received during recovery. He speaks highly of the Cardiac Rehabilitation team and valued having access to the Mark A. Chapman Wellness Center as he worked to rebuild his strength.

“All the girls in Cardiac Rehab were amazing,” Justin shared. “I’m very grateful for them and for the ER nurses.”

Since his cardiac event, Justin has made significant lifestyle changes. He now focuses on healthier eating, staying active, and prioritizing his overall well-being. He’s returned to work and is currently channeling his energy into building a new home, though recovery hasn’t been without challenges.

“There’s still some anxiety,” he admitted. “When something doesn’t feel right, I remind myself to breathe and stay calm.”

Today, Justin’s story is a powerful reminder of how quickly heart symptoms can appear and how important it is to listen to your body and seek care right away. He’s thankful that when he needed help most, high-quality emergency care was close to home.

We were excited to welcome Charly Steinbrock and Annika Wernecke, juniors at Clifton-Clyde High School, to CCMC as they completed a job shadow experience with our Speech Therapist, Megan Gfellar.

As part of their advisory requirement, Charly and Annika chose to spend time observing how Megan works with patients to improve communication and overall quality of life.

Experiences like this give students a firsthand look at careers in healthcare and the meaningful impact they can have on others. Thank you, Charly and Annika, for spending the day with us! 💙
