Having an infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can cause significant stress and anxiety in mothers and fathers. A placebo-controlled clinical study evaluated the effects of inhaling rose essential oil with mothers of premature infants in the NICU. Mothers inhaled rose essential oil (diluted to 10%) for 5 to 10 minutes over ten consecutive nights. Anxiety significant reduced in the rose group when compared to the control (standard care only) suggesting that inhaling rose essential oil is an effective and noninvasive way to decrease stress/anxiety in mothers with children in the NICU.
