What is Food Stagnation? 🥧🍗🍂🍽️ We’ve all been there: second helpings of everything, multiple desserts, that extra slice of pie. Now you’re uncomfortably full, bloated, maybe nauseous, and wondering why you did this to yourself. In Chinese Medicine, we call this “food stagnation” and you don’t just have to suffer through it.

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, your Spleen and Stomach transform food into usable energy (Qi). When you overeat, especially rich, heavy, greasy foods, you overwhelm this system. The food sits in your stomach like a traffic jam in your digestive tract.

Signs you’re experiencing food stagnation:
🥧Abdominal bloating and distension
🥧Feeling overly full, even hours after eating
🥧Nausea or loss of appetite
🥧Acid reflux or belching
🥧Sluggishness and fatigue
🥧A heavy feeling in your stomach

What to do to help:
1️⃣Acupuncture can provide remarkably fast relief and many patients feel significantly better within hours of treatment.
Acupuncture helps by:
▫️Stimulating peristalsis (the movement of food through your digestive tract)
▫️Reducing inflammation in the digestive system
▫️Regulating stomach acid production
▫️Releasing tension in the abdomen
▫️Activating your parasympathetic nervous system to support digestion
▫️Breaking up the “stagnation” and getting things moving again

2️⃣Herbs:
In addition to acupuncture, we carry Chinese herbal formulas specifically designed for digestive issues. One of the most effective and time-tested formulas for food stagnation is Bao He Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill).
▫️What is Bao He Wan? This classical formula has been used for centuries to treat food stagnation. It contains ingredients like hawthorn berry (for digesting meat and fats), radish seed (for reducing bloating), and herbs that harmonize the stomach and move stagnant food through the digestive tract.
▫️When to use it: We typically recommend to use it it when you’ve already overdone it and are experiencing bloating, fullness, acid reflux, or that heavy, uncomfortable feeling. Many people feel relief within a few hours.

🖐️Looking for an evidence based supplement to actually help your PCOS? Ovasitol from is a premium inositol supplement that supports ovarian function, hormonal balance, and metabolic health. Those with PCOS often experience insulin resistance, high androgen levels, and irregular ovulation.

Inositol is a sugar alcohol naturally found in the body that plays a key role in insulin signaling and hormone regulation. Ovasitol contains a 40:1 ratio of myo inositol to D-chiro inositol, mirroring the body’s natural balance for best absorption.

Supplementing with myo inositol and D-chiro inositol can improve insulin sensitivity, balance hormones, regulate menstrual cycles, support healthy ovulation, and fertility outcomes.

If you missed Julie's (sold out!) class this week on Chinese medicine kitchen cold remedies, but are still wanting to learn more? Then check out this tea made especially for that dry cough and throat tickle that you get at the end of your cold or when cold dry weather strikes.

In Chinese medicine we consider this ‘Lung Dryness’ or ‘Autumn Dryness’, and it makes perfect sense. Fall is the season of the Lung and dryness is its enemy. Our Lungs need to stay moist to function well. When dryness hits, perhaps from the drier air, we get that persistent tickle and cough. The solution? A simple, delicious Pear and Almond tea that you can make quickly and offers real relief.

🍐 Pears are used to help the Lungs regain their moisture, generating fluids and soothing the dryness.
🌰 Almonds have a descending quality that helps guide Lung Qi downward, stopping that upward cough reflex.
🍯 Add in a little honey and you have sweet relief.

This is food as medicine: simple, effective, and probably already in your kitchen.

Ingredients:
▫️1 ripe pear (Asian pears work especially well)
▫️1 handful of almonds (raw, unsalted)
▫️2 cups of water
▫️Honey to taste
▫️Fresh mint leaves

Directions:
▫️Cut pear in half, remove stem and seeds
▫️Chop pear into small pieces
▫️Place almonds and pear pieces in water
▫️Bring to boil, cover, reduce to simmer for 15 minutes
▫️Remove from heat
▫️Strain if desired (or eat the pears and almonds for extra benefit)
▫️Add honey and mint to taste

☕Drink 1-2 cups daily during dry season or when experiencing dry cough

🙃 Feeling a little off lately but can't put your finger on why exactly? As we go through life and face its challenges, it can start to affect the state of Qi in our bodies.
You might notice that the wear and tear of life might be making you feel a little less resilient. You might begin to feel a little tired, more irritable, and then suddenly experience the worst PMS and menstrual cramps in a really long time.
These can all be common signs that you might need to come back in for a series of acupuncture treatments to rebalance your body and get you feeling better.

⛅Vitamin D is so important especially as the days are getting shorter and we just aren't being exposed to as much sunlight.
This vitamin is crucial for supporting bone, immune, mood, and overall health.

Vitamin D is essential for many things such as hormone health, mood, bone health and immunity.
Studies have shown that having sufficient vitamin D decreases the risk and severity of respiratory tract infections, which is especially important this time of year!

Wondering about if or how much vitamin D you should be taking daily for optimal health? Ask your provider on your next acupuncture visit.
