“Often we lose our way and are afraid we’ll get in trouble if we tell the truth. But we need to bathe in the river of truth. When we take a bath with water, the physical body is cleansed, but water cannot wash the soul. The river of truth is an inner virtue. Always speaking the truth is like pure, cooling, crystal-clear water that purifies the soul. The waves in the water are compassion, and the banks of the flowing river are susheelta, kindness, the ability to overlook faults and forgive, hold no judgments and instead constantly consider the welfare of all. Whoever bathes in that river of truth will reach the goal.”

Beneath the Chariot of Dharma’s flag, which represents truth, are the banners, symbolizing susheelta or kindness. The root of this kindness is a pure and simple heart.

Susheelta is the capacity to overlook people’s mistakes or faults, no matter how serious, andforgive them. It is also the capacity to overlook people’s conditions, whether they are rich or poor, strong or weak. Even if someone has hurt you, susheelta is the ability to say, “It’s all right, forget it, no big deal. Let’s move forward and do something together that is constructive for both of us.”

Tulsidasji talks about such kindness very beautifully. I’ve never seen anyone but Dhyanyogi-ji who had that quality. From one minute to the next, no matter what people said to Him, even if someone insulted Him, He treated everyone with the same love and kindness.
