Benjamin Franklin Palmer was awarded the first American patent for an artificial limb, for a design based on a British artificial limb. The foot is made from a block of wood, but followed the natural shape of a foot and could be inserted in a regular shoe. Notice how Palmer solves the problem of the foot, despite using rigid material. The foot pivots on the ankle hinge during the contact, recoil and passing phase. Elastic bands around the heel and ankle stretch at the heel strike, releasing energy in the recoil and passing phase of the walk cycle while the limb is weight bearing. The toes pivot, twisting a spring inside the foot during the high point, helping push off as the leg moves from the passing phase into the contact phase. Palmer provided almost a third of the artificial legs issued to Civil War amputees – 1,141 legs total.
