'Falling back' into routine can be challenging! Check out our hacks to support morning routines below!
1. Visual Schedule
Structure = success! Visual schedules help kids see what’s next and reduce morning stress. Try pictures or icons to show each step — get dressed, eat, brush teeth, backpack.
2. Nighttime Prep
A smoother morning starts the night before. Lay out clothes, prep lunches, and pack bags together — this builds planning, sequencing, and independence while saving time when everyone’s sleepy.
3. Waking Up the Body
Movement gets the body ready to focus. Try a few animal walks, wall push-ups, or yoga to help kids regulate and feel alert before heading out the door.
4. First/Then Language
Clear language supports smoother transitions. Try: “First brush teeth, then breakfast.” Simple, consistent phrasing helps kids understand expectations and stay on track.
5. Organizing
Keep it predictable. Store clothes, toothbrushes, and backpacks in the same place every day. Consistent routines help build independence and executive functioning skills.
6. Reward System
Turn mornings into a win. Use stickers or checkmarks for completing tasks. Positive reinforcement keeps motivation high and builds confidence in independence.
7. Modeling the Routine
Kids learn by watching you. Narrate your steps out loud (“I’m brushing my teeth, then I’ll pack my bag”). Modeling builds sequencing and helps them understand routines more clearly.
8. “Just Right” Wake-Up Routine
Every child has a “just right” start. Some need ball rolls or quiet cuddles, others thrive on music and movement. Meeting your child’s sensory needs sets the tone for a “just right” day.
9. Limited Choices
“Blue shirt or green shirt?” Offering two options builds independence and reduces overwhelm. Kids feel empowered and mornings feel smoother for everyone.
