Dr. Coplan has attained recognition in all three medical specialties pertaining to child development: Pediatrics (Fellow, American Academy of Pediatrics, and Board Certified in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics), Child Neurology (Fellow, Child Neurology Society, and Board Certified, Neurodevelopmental Disabilities), and Child Psychiatry (Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine). Dr. Coplan’s book, Making Sense of Autistic Spectrum Disorders: Create the brightest future for your child with the best treatment options (Bantam-Dell, 2010), introduces a revolutionary three-dimensional model of ASD that simultaneously takes into account a child’s atypical features, level of general intelligence, and age. This 3D model provides a “roadmap” on which to chart a child’s progress over time, and a framework for making decisions about the best therapies at each stage of development. His book also addresses the many conflicting claims regarding causation of autistic spectrum disorder, proven and unproven interventions, and possible reasons for the so-called “explosion” of cases of ASD. Increased numbers of children & adults with ASD ("administrative prevalence") tells us nothing about rate of occurrence of new cases ("incidence" / "epidemic"). People with mild ASD have been with us all along, but overlooked.

Jump over to my blog and read my lastest post. Although this post appears to have "nothing to do with autism," it is all about clear thinking, tolerance of others, and the ability to remain unswayed by fear and prejudice. Hence, it has everything to do with autism. If we suffer the same fate on this side of the Pond, we will not be able to invoke ignorance - only stupidity (or, worse, indifference).

John Bull, long-lived and much-beloved English yeoman farmer, has died of self-inflicted wounds. Although born in comparatively modern times (1712), Bull’s ancestors trace their lineage to the fall of the Roman Empire (476 CE). Signal events in Bull’s family archive included the Norman Invasion (106...

Hop on over to my web page to read my latest blog post. Does termination of pregnancy becuase of disability in the fetus mean that we are rejecting our existing child with disability? Dr. Coplan argues that it does not.

A few weeks ago, we started a discussion stemming from Indiana’s new state law forbidding termination of pregancy based upon the disability status of the fetus (here, and here). I asked readers to write in, and tell me what they wanted in the way of a physician, if they were ever in that situation.…
