3.23.26. BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
Kathleen, Rob and Jake Lapekas are big supporters of Autism Everyone!
Jake is an amazing young man, now age 26, who has shown many folks how beautiful Autism can be.
Jake has an amazing smile, and loves to share his love for Disney through his Disney character voice impersonations.
•What was your autism journey?•
Our journey began in 2001 when our son, Jake, was diagnosed with Autism. At the time, Autism was not as widely recognized as it is today, and no one in our immediate circle truly understood the diagnosis.
It was a lonely experience; while our friends had "neurotypical" children, we found ourselves feeling increasingly disconnected.
Initially, I went into "Manager Mom-Mode," trying to handle every struggle for Jake to ensure he had the best life possible.
Then one day, I read a meme one day that read, "When you cut it for me, write it for me, open it for me, or tie it for me, all I learn is that you do it better than me."
I realized that by doing everything for him, I was unintentionally teaching him that I could do things better than he could.
This was a hard-hitting revelation: to reach his potential, I had to allow him to face adversity and learn to do things for himself.
We moved to Evansville in 2005 when Jake was five. While we found the area supportive, we had to be proactive in seeking services. Feeding therapy with Dr. Betsy Clawson was a major breakthrough for us.
In 2012, I joined the Board of Directors for Autism Everyone (formerly IASF and Autism Evansville) to help support other families navigating similar paths.
•What advice would you give to families struggling with a new diagnosis?•
For families struggling with a new diagnosis, my advice is to understand that you cannot simply "fix" or control Autism.
It is like a slow-cooker; progress takes time, but eventually, you will see remarkable breakthroughs in everyday tasks.
Try not to worry about whether your child will "catch up."
Like popcorn kernels, every child "pops" at their own time when given enough heat and patience. 🤍
