What do you want someone to walk away feeling after a Life Start course?

I want them to say, “That was the best damn First Aid class I’ve ever taken.” I want them to be surprised they actually had fun—because that’s not what anyone expects from First Aid.
More than that, I want them to walk out feeling confident—like if something happens, they can step up. And that they’ll go home and talk about it. With their partner. Their kids. Their friends.
Because First Aid shouldn’t just be some boring box you check every three years. It should be something people talk about—and actually remember.

What do you think is the biggest myth about first aid training?

That the rules change constantly and that you can’t help if you’re not certified. 🙃
The truth? Most of it comes down to common sense. And no, the standards don’t flip every year. I always chuckle when someone says, “Well, we used to do finger sweeps!” So I break out a stack of old First Aid manuals and go—“Show me where.”
They never can. 👀

You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to be willing. Because confidence—not certification—is what saves lives.

When do you know a class really “got it”? What’s that moment like for you as an instructor?

I call it the lightbulb moment. I see it every time, every class!
It usually hits when they realize that CPR isn’t about fixing the problem—it’s about manually pumping the heart to keep blood flowing and the brain alive. You can see it in their face… that moment where it all clicks.
And as an instructor? That moment is everything. Because once they get it—they get it. They understand why this matters. And suddenly, the class becomes real for them.
That’s when I know they’ll carry this with them.

They’re unconscious but breathing? It’s time for the recovery position.

Roll them onto their side, tilt the head slightly back to keep the airway open, and let gravity do its thing.

💬 Breathing? Safe.

What’s your go-to way to keep people awake in a training session?

Candy. Jokes. And maybe the threat of a flying marker. 😂 (Just kidding… mostly.)

But seriously, the real trick? Start with something that matters. I kick off every class with survival rates—like the ideal stats out of King County, Washington. Once people realize they are the link between life and death, it hits different. That moment shifts the energy. They get that this course will be what they make of it—and what they take home could literally save a life.

Throw in a few laughs and some sugar? They’re wide awake and fully in.💥

What’s one story from your training career that still gives you goosebumps?

Honestly, there are a lot—but one that really sticks with me happened in my second year of business. I got a message from someone saying that because of the class they took, they were able to help save a resident.
That hit me hard.
It felt like the butterfly effect—because I chose to do something different, something engaging, something that included different learning styles… it caused a chain reaction that helped save someone’s life. That’s pretty cool.
Another one that really stuck with me was when a participant used their training on a resident who didn’t end up making it. But afterward, the family came to thank them for doing enough to keep their loved one alive until they could say goodbye. That moment gave them peace.
It wasn’t a happy ending—but it mattered.
