For streams and rivers to flow there must be adequate water and a clear pathway. When there is too little or the river is blocked with pollution or debris the water will stagnate.

The flow of Qi, Blood and Fluids in our body is very similar. When we have adequate amounts of these vital substances and the path that they flow in is open, we have energy, vitality, can ward off disease, and heal quickly. When it is inadequate or blocked we stagnate. Left alone this stasis will grow from a meager Qi stagnation to entanglements of congealed Blood and Fluids. Not fun - and stasis is a common problem in our culture.

Stagnation exists on a continuum. With minor stagnation we may feel stuck and frustrated which may remedy itself. When it becomes excessive, repetitive, or is left untreated a deeper pattern of stasis manifest leading to both physical and mental, emotional pathologies. We need to move stagnation. However, stagnation is only a branch, a symptom. To effectively treat it we need to find and address the root cause.

What is causing the stagnation? Blood deficiency, injury, mental and emotional issues, inappropriate ego? One or more of these can cause or contribute to the pattern.
Fortunately, there are many tools available to treat stagnation - points, foods, herbs, lifestyle recommendations. Visit my blog to learn more about how stagnation manifests, affects the different organs, how you can identify it and start treating to get things flowing smoothly again.

Have an HSA or FSA?
Thank you to the client who reached out asking about Health Savings and Flex Spending accounts. I'm not great at remembering to mention that you may be able to use your HSA or FSA for Amma therapy or nutrition consultations with me. In most cases, yes, you can use them, but it depends on your HSA or FSA program. Many folks have no problem using their card to pay for sessions. I have NPIs (National Provider Identifier) for nutrition and massage and can provide you with an invoice with CPT codes to submit for reimbursement to your policy if necessary.
Connect with me for further details if you want them.

We are still making our way through this year's crop of pumpkins.
Okay, we've barely begun, they should last us through most of the winter and we eat pumpkin regularly.

Some days you just want pancakes.

🥞🎃
1 1/2 c milk of choice I use a vanilla soy milk or almond milk
1 c pumpkin puree
1 egg
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 Tbsp maple syrup
2 c flour I use spelt often for this recipe
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp fresh ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
orange peel zest
🥞🎃
In a bowl, combine milk, pumpkin and egg, oil and maple syrup. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and orange zest.
Stir into the pumpkin mixture just enough to combine. Heat a lightly oiled cast iron or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour about 1/4 cup of batter onto hot pan. Brown pancakes on each side and serve with warm maple syrup and apples.
Serve with pan fried apples in maple syrup. Winter squashes actually correspond with the Earth element in Asian food energetics – meaning they are appropriate for all seasons and the transition of seasons. You can identify these foods by their ability to be stored in a simple, unprocessed form. The Earth element foods are central part of the diet and anchor and nourish the digestive system, so if spring pops up and you still have a pumpkin rolling around, don’t hesitate to use that beautiful food up.
Cheers. Be safe.
