Check out my article explaining diastasis recti - what it is, do we need to “fix it” and some myths surrounding it!

What is Diastasis Recti (DR)? During pregnancy, there is a widening of the space between the two sides of the abdominal muscle called the re**us abdominis in order to allow for stretching of the belly for a growing baby. This happens during every pregnancy and is completely normal. Usually, within a...

Had a baby recently? Or in the last several years but something still doesn’t feel quite the same as before? Checking in with a Physical therapist is a great way to help get yourself back to feeling great again. It can help with your post baby exercise goals, figure out why your neck/back/pelvis hurts every time you pick up or feed your baby, restore muscle for getting around or just to help with that pesky leaking while sneezing! You give so much of yourself to your baby but your body can be given back to you!

With the warm weather I have been seeing more and more running injuries and pain lately, so I thought I’d share some tips that have helped a lot of my runners avoid running related pain. Runners love to run but often don’t put the time in for other exercises and stretches that are necessary to keep the body strong and flexible enough to handle the repetitive impact that running has on you. Tweaking the way your workout week looks goes a long way to prevent having to see me after injury or pain occur! For more info or to schedule a running assessment or treatment please feel free to reach out to me by DM or email eliaspersonalpt@gmail.com. Happy running!!!

In case you needed another reason to stay physically active... Check out this fascinating article that shows that those who are consistently physically active are statistically shown to be less likely to suffer from severe Covid outcomes such as hospitalization.

Current guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate to rigorous exercise per week. But even any amount of consistent exercise was shown to decrease risk of serious illness from Covid.

When it comes to being a mom, let’s face it, sometimes “perfect posture” with all the squats in the world just doesn’t cut it. While it’s always great to strengthen our bodies and practice good body mechanics, life also hands us many moments that require our bodies to move and twist and bend in “less than ideal” ways. How can we prepare our bodies for these demands so that we don’t strain a muscle or injure our backs? With mobility exercises! Mobility is the ability to move a body part through its full range of motion without restrictions. By adding mobility exercises such as the ones pictured into our exercise routine, we help to prepare our bodies for unexpected or awkward movements that we encounter throughout the day. The more we can move all our joints without difficulty the more equipped we are for a larger variety of demands! Email me at eliaspersonalpt@gmail.com for additional free mobility exercises or go to www.personalptathome.com to see all my services and classes!

I have recently been doing a deep dive into diastasis recti research and information out there and I have learned that this is an area of PT treatment that is constantly evolving the more knowledge and research that is done. I will admit that I used to treat DR with a lot of “do’s and dont’s”, and more of a checklist approach, but the truth is every woman is different and every diastasis needs to be addressed with an individualized approach. And yes, that approach will likely include crunches and planks, but in a controlled and appropriate way. Contact me for more info or to set up an in person or virtual evaluation.
