Plate To Plate

Plate To Plate Two years ago, I was a junk food junkie. Today, I want to inspire others to eat for nourishment and wellness.

Together, we can be successful - plate to plate to plate to plate.

For those who have known food allergies, it's easy to feel like we need to scrap all our family-favorite recipes from the past and replace them with new recipes.

With baked goods, this is sometimes the case. But this BEEF STEW recipe is a great example of how we can take an old recipe and modify it to fit our current needs.

These are the swaps that we would make, based on our unique food allergies. Your swaps might be different!

All Purpose Flour = Arrowroot Flour or Tapioca Starch
Pepper = Grains of Paradise
Butter = Coconut oil or vegan butter
Vegetable Oil = Grapeseed or Avocado Oil
Dry Red Wine = Apple Cider Vinegar

Have you tried swapping out ingredients from your old recipes?

This classic warm-you-up stew becomes even more comforting when made with well-marbled pot roast rather than the usual stewing beef. The fat melts slowly as it cooks, tenderizing the beef into juicy melt-in-your-mouth morsels. A slow finish in the oven gives the stew its rich, hearty texture.

Have you tried Cassava Flour? It's one of our favorite flour options, and this recipe is just one of the reasons! A quick, simple, delicious, grain-free pizza crust seems too good to be true but we think this recipe will be on rotation in your home!

{One note for this recipe - be sure to swap the olive oil for something else (like avocado oil or grapeseed oil) because olive oil hydrogenates when it's heated.}

This cassava flour pizza crust recipe is easy to make, holds together well and has the doughy texture of traditional pizza.

Normally I would try to have something poetic, elegant and subtle in this part of the blog post….but that’s just not happening today. Today I’m just going to lay it all out in plain speech because I’ve got a ton of things going on but I don’t want you to have to wait any longer …

✅ ✅ ✅ Snacking success is found in these SNACK PACKS! Tired of your kids whining "I neeeed a snaaaaack!"? So are we, friend. So are we. Snack Packs, to the rescue. We like making up a bin of snacks over the weekend with a variety of options. One bin for the fridge (for items that need refrigeration), one bin for the pantry. Anytime someone needs a snack, they have all these nutritious options to choose from, already prepped and ready to go. Snacking WIN!

✅ Some Ideas for the FRIDGE SNACK BIN:
- Sliced peppers
- Cubed cheese
- Carrot sticks
- Sliced cucumbers
- Pepperonis (we like Organic Valley Uncured Pepperoni)
- Celery sticks with creamy goat cheese
- Hard-boiled eggs

✅ Some Ideas for PANTRY SNACK BINS:
- Individual portions of trail mix (see our post from Monday!)
- Individual portions of favorite crackers or chips
- Individual portions of nuts & seeds

Notice, there are way more options listed for our FRIDGE BIN than our PANTRY BIN! Why do you think that is? 👇 Chime in below, we'd love to hear from you!

🙃 🙃 🙃 Let's not overcomplicate things - remember all your old go-to snacks? Some of them can be tweaked a little bit to fit your unique food needs. For example: CHIPS and SALSA and GUAC! 🎉 🎉 🎉

(Check out links in comments!)

🎉 CHIPS: We really like Siete Grain-Free tortilla chips! Why grain-free? Because, like it or not, gluten & some grains are a source of inflammation (yes, even if you don't have 'celiacs'). We've also liked The Real Coconut Tortilla Chips, made with coconut flour! If you want to go completely unprocessed, what about dipping some sliced peppers (especially the sweet mini peppers!), sliced cucumbers, celery (the crunch of chips without the junk!)

🎉 SALSA: Muir Glen is a go-to for us, not only because it's organic but also because most flavors do not contain black & white pepper (this is a common food allergy!).

🎉 GUAC: Mixing up a batch at home is ideal, but what if you're looking for something to bring to work? We really like the individual serving sizes for this purpose! Look for an organic option & check ingredients for food allergies!

🎉 HUMMUS: This is a nice alternative to guacamole, if you're looking to change things up! Try a Mexican flavor with tortilla chips or peppers!

👏 👏 👏 One of our all-time FAVORITE snacks, right here! These are like Mac & Cheese Bites, but better. These are easy to store in the fridge - heat up a few for a quick snack (or make them as your dinner side tonight!). Get creative and try your own variations - we've been wanting to try a breakfast version with crumbled sausage or bacon 😍 Make up a big old batch, and be sure to hide some because these are sure to go quick!

Broccoli Cheddar Quinoa Bites are bite-sized, protein-packed mini mac and cheese muffins made with quinoa, broccoli and cheddar cheese. 🥳 🥳 🥳 Let's kick off SNACK WEEK with the most booorrring snack of all time. Trail Mix. We've all had it, we've all hated it. But it doesn't have to be this way! And when done well, Trail Mix can pack a huge nutritional punch.

A few Plate to Plate tips:

👉 We like to make a large batch over the weekend, and divide it up into snack-size portions so it's easy to grab & go during the week.

👉 Get the kids involved by setting up a Trail Mix Bar! Set out a bunch of ingredient options, give each kiddo a bowl, and let them mix up their own recipe! Encourage them to grab a variety of ingredients, and once their bowl is full they can divvy it up into snack sized portions!

👉 Be thrifty and purchase any items you can from the bulk food section! We like to store all these ingredients in one large bin in the pantry. Many of these ingredients make great salad toppings, too - so having them together only makes sense!

👉 A basic Trail Mix recipe will have nuts, seeds, something sweet, and something savory. From there, we can be creative and have fun!

👉 We like the following add-ins:
- Nuts: go raw to avoid hydrogenated fats, and choose your favorite nuts! We love cashews, pecans, walnuts, macadamia...what's your fave?
- Seeds: sunflower, pepitas, flax, h**p, chia! Seeds are a good way to bulk up you mix!
- Spices: sea salt, curry, ginger, cayenne, cinnamon - just add a sprinkling to taste! This really kicks things up!
- Unsweetened Coconut Flakes: unless you're one of thoooose people that 'hate coconut' 🤨
- Dried Fruit: Ginger, mango, or bananas are all good choices! Or stick with raisins and cranberries - just be sure to check the amount of added sugar!
- Mini Chocolate Chips: go for a dairy free, no sugar version, or do straight-up cacao nibs!

👉 Looking for an actual recipe? Here's one that looks good! Soaking/drying the nuts is completely optional - if you're looking for something quick & easy, skip it!

I've been reading a lot about the benefits of soaking and dehydrating nuts prior to eating them, so I thought I would try it for the first time for my trail mix. I purchased all of my raw nuts and seeds at Whole Foods in the bulk section. It is much cheaper than buying a... Read more »
