🥳 🥳 🥳 Let's kick off SNACK WEEK with the most booorrring snack of all time. Trail Mix. We've all had it, we've all hated it. But it doesn't have to be this way! And when done well, Trail Mix can pack a huge nutritional punch.
A few Plate to Plate tips:
👉 We like to make a large batch over the weekend, and divide it up into snack-size portions so it's easy to grab & go during the week.
👉 Get the kids involved by setting up a Trail Mix Bar! Set out a bunch of ingredient options, give each kiddo a bowl, and let them mix up their own recipe! Encourage them to grab a variety of ingredients, and once their bowl is full they can divvy it up into snack sized portions!
👉 Be thrifty and purchase any items you can from the bulk food section! We like to store all these ingredients in one large bin in the pantry. Many of these ingredients make great salad toppings, too - so having them together only makes sense!
👉 A basic Trail Mix recipe will have nuts, seeds, something sweet, and something savory. From there, we can be creative and have fun!
👉 We like the following add-ins:
- Nuts: go raw to avoid hydrogenated fats, and choose your favorite nuts! We love cashews, pecans, walnuts, macadamia...what's your fave?
- Seeds: sunflower, pepitas, flax, h**p, chia! Seeds are a good way to bulk up you mix!
- Spices: sea salt, curry, ginger, cayenne, cinnamon - just add a sprinkling to taste! This really kicks things up!
- Unsweetened Coconut Flakes: unless you're one of thoooose people that 'hate coconut' 🤨
- Dried Fruit: Ginger, mango, or bananas are all good choices! Or stick with raisins and cranberries - just be sure to check the amount of added sugar!
- Mini Chocolate Chips: go for a dairy free, no sugar version, or do straight-up cacao nibs!
👉 Looking for an actual recipe? Here's one that looks good! Soaking/drying the nuts is completely optional - if you're looking for something quick & easy, skip it!
I've been reading a lot about the benefits of soaking and dehydrating nuts prior to eating them, so I thought I would try it for the first time for my trail mix. I purchased all of my raw nuts and seeds at Whole Foods in the bulk section. It is much cheaper than buying a... Read more »
