Melrose Rotary Club gifted us with lots of blankets and towels — they’re among our most-needed items for the MVES Emergency Closet! When an older adult or adult with disabilities is facing urgent need, our “Closet” enables us to provide necessities like shampoo, bedding and toilet paper. We’re grateful to Melrose Rotary for their ongoing support and for all they do for the community!

MA Representative Jeffrey Turco shared a moving story yesterday about how Mystic Valley Elder Services supported his family. He also championed legislation that’s essential for older adults and people with disabilities, and enables our team to provide the support they need and deserve. (See our page for more from our Legislative Breakfast.)

Our Legislative Breakfast today reminded us how powerful our community can be when stories, data and dedicated leaders come together to support older adults and people with disabilities. Our CEO, Lisa Gurgone, highlighted our legislative priorities. Our Legislative Co-Hosts were MA Representative Jeffrey Turco and Mary Ann Nay, District Director for State Senator Bruce Tarr. Representative Turco spoke movingly about his family’s caregiving journey and how Mystic Valley helped his mother‑in‑law remain at home. He encouraged leaders to “be fierce advocates” for families who rely on these vital supports.

We also heard a story of love and resilience from Frank Oullette and Colleen Molloy — Colleen’s stroke at age 53, a lengthy nursing facility stay, and how Mystic Valley assisted their journey to a new, safer home with support for both. Dozens of legislators and city and town officials joined us, sharing their own insights and reinforcing the need to invest in essential community‑based programs.

A heartfelt thank‑you to all who attended, including: State Senator Sal DiDomenico, Senator Pat Jehlen, Em Sheeran from the Office of Senator Jason Lewis, Christine Barber - State Representative, State Representative Paul Donato, State Representative Richard M. Haggerty, State Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian, Staff for State Representative Brad Jones, State Representative Joe McGonagle, Steve Ultrino for State Representative, Everett Mayor Robert Van Campen, Malden Mayor Gary Christenson, Medford Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn, Melrose Mayor Jennifer Grigoraitis, and North Reading Town Administrator Michael Gilleberto.

Special thanks to our Board members who attended and help champion our work: Edward Rocha (Board VP, who helped present today’s program), Kristin Ahlman, Michelle Clopper, Janice Donatelli, Michael Festa, Karen Fotino, Pamela Kelly, Carole Lowenstein, Edward Miller, James Oosterman, Joanne Puopolo, Kristen Spence and Judie Vankooiman.

Mystic Valley was delighted to host Nurse Managers from around the state last week. We are one of 24 Aging Services Access Points (ASAPs) that each serve a region of the Commonwealth. Part of that role entails working closely with the MA Executive Office of Aging & Independence and our fellow ASAPs to share insights, training and more. Thank you to Desiree Kelley, Clinical Nurse Manager, and Melissa Enos, Home Care and Program Analytics Nurse from the state's Executive Office of Aging & Independence and to all the ASAPs who joined us!

Every year we provide nearly 800,000 meals to older adults and people with disabilities in our communities, including many who face significant barriers to food security. We also hold a Nutrition Open House annually for the Mystic Valley team. We get to sample the yummy food, which is a great plus! 😋 More importantly, our staff gets to learn more about how our Nutrition Department works, so they’re able to advise the people they serve. For example, while trying the Lo Mein and Marry Me Chicken, they’re also learning about our range of cultural and medically tailored meals, about home delivery vs. community dining sites, and more. Thank you to our Team for the tasty open house and the work you do every day, and thanks to our awesome our catering partners City Fresh Foods, TRIO Community Meals and Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center.
