2025 starts a New Year of hope and promise of unknown events. We live our lives from day to day dealing with the challenges on hand, this is one part of the journey, the other is taking time to reflect and care for ourselves. Without caregivers the one needing care is lost. I urge anyone who is dealing with the responsibility of caring to take time for themselves. Let us stay committed and positive for all the blessings we receive daily.

I wish to share my personal experience with hospice care, specifically with my mother, who passed away in May. Despite her declining health, she had periods where she seemed well enough to go on a brief trip to the coast, which we did two weeks before she passed. She was under hospice care for a month prior to her passing. While I wanted to attend to her personal needs, I didn't want to be her hospice nurse. The company we worked with was accommodating and made timely adjustments as she declined, but they didn't come when she was actively dying. My daughter and I were left to care for her as she passed away. It was the most difficult experience of my life, and I couldn't cry for days after. However, I am slowly coming to terms with the fact that she is no longer suffering. I appreciate the concept of hospice care and understand that everyone eventually passes on, but it doesn't make the sadness any easier. I feel this way whenever I work with my patients, and it takes me a few days to recover. This will take much more time.

Sometimes what we think we know is actually not what happens in hospice. We enjoyed meeting Lisa on the first day of spring, she was pleasant and welcoming, she started telling me about the big adventure she had earlier that day. She had climbed miles up the hill behind her son,s house to meet some of her friends, she had a great time but now she was tired, luckily her son heard her calls and carried her on his shoulders all the way home ! Aye yes mama , her son exclaimed, viva Peru! I laughed and learned some of the precious exchanges these two shared. Week after week we visited but she was stable, we decided to discharge her until there was a change . Two months passed and her son called, can you come see mama ? His voice was soft and sad. I went out to see our dear Lisa , she did not look up or smile, she looked tired and weak. Mama the doctor is here to see you,can you say hello? She looked up for a moment and asked for her mom. I sat down and held her hand , her breathing was labored but she gave was not in distress. We signed her up again, she had stopped eating . The next day was uneventful but on the third day she definitely was very tired and could not sit up. We made her comfortable on her favorite sofa , as the evening turned into night ,surrounded by her family Lisa gently slipped away. Viva Peru her son whispered and back up the hill she hurried away to meet her mom and friends!
We are here for you 24/7 , willing to share the journey.
