The 104th Anniversary of Veterans Day (November 11, 2022)

Originally called “Armistice Day” because it fell on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour that the signing of the Armistice which ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to "Veterans Day" in order to account for all veterans from all wars. Today we celebrate and honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

NEW FREEDOM INITIATIVE 21-Year Anniversary!!!

I can’t believe that it’s been 21 years since I introduced President George W. Bush on behalf of his campaign’s Disability Coalition as we unveiled the “New Freedom Initiative” in the East Room of The White House on February 1, 2001. Equally as humbling was that my late father James G. Tingus was in attendance in the front row with some of the bipartisan pillars (at the time) of the U.S. Senate. Little did we know that President Bush would appoint me to two consecutive senior positions: Director, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (ED, 2001-2007), and then Deputy Assistant Secretary, Planning and Evaluation (Disabilit, Aging, and Long-Term Care Policy) (HHS, 2007-2009). I could have only worked for a fellow compassionate conservative like Bush 43. If you listen to his complete remarks, you’ll understand why given today’s political discord.

Seated at a low dias in order to remain at eye level with attendees, President Bush spoke to a group of disabled people about his new freedom initiative. The initiative would fund new research on technologies for the blind and deaf, expand aid for telecommuting, and develop partnerships with charities for the disabled.

Still on Cloud-9 from yesterday’s (October 10, 2021) final show at LA Fashion Week featuring designs by one of my best friends Nicholas Mayfield. As Arthur Chipman’s new Director of Diversity and Inclusion, it was my goal to institutionalize full inclusion into the mission of the organization. With corporate support from Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi of RespectAbility, Christina Cannarella of Mother Road Studios, and my brother Mike Tingus, we achieved a show beyond expectations. My observation of the crowd was that the non-disabled seem to thirst for something different, compassionate and thought provoking that instead of watching stiff models walking the runway, they wanted to see human kind and it’s spirit embracing the differences that we all share. A union of non-disabled and disabled having a fun time showing off their s***k in cool urban clothes. Thank you Arthur for having confidence in my all-inclusive decision making as you’ve raised the bar for NY, Paris and Milan. You deserve the credit for bringing our communities together. A special shoutout to my stylist Jason Griffin for this “For The Stars” on Melrose $5K loaned outfit that weighed more than me. Damn fashion is not easy!!! 🤣♿️

This Sunday (October 10, 2021) and for the first time in history, we will have an all-inclusive lineup of able-bodied and models with disabilities on the runway wearing creations by my extended family Nicholas Mayfield.
