GratiTuesday – Gratitude for Cupcakes
Totally impressed with the wide & seemingly endless variety of topics that have been singled out for celebration. Whether it is a National Day, or Week, or Month, there is something to celebrate every single day. October 14th may be one of my favorite National Days because today is not only GratiTuesday, it is also National Dessert Day. Hooray for gratitude and dessert - especially gluten free chocolate cupcakes!
Believe it or not cupcakes have a rich history. Amelia Simmons’ American Cookery, published 1796, boasts the earliest known receipt for “a cake to be baked in small cups.” The actual term ‘cupcake’ has been traced back to a 1828 cookbook…
Here’s something else I just learned about the noble cupcake; it has several alternate monikers:
– Fairy Cake
– Patty Cake
– Cup Cakes – distinguished from the more common Cupcake (one-word)
Now that I have whetted your appetite, imagine a world without chocolate cupcakes. I will admit my response to such a world may seem a bit overblown in the grand scheme of things. Yet such a world loomed large for me over a decade ago when my physician strongly urged me to ‘go gluten-free.’ Not such a big deal these days, but 10+ years ago gluten-free meant coarse, dry, mealy and crumbly sad baked goods, resembling grated cardboard with sprinkles on top. Blech!
I am so grateful for the all bakers and test kitchens who have made it their mission to refine alternate wheat-and-gluten-free flour blends. Permit me to share a link to a five star recipe for gluten-free chocolate cupcakes... found on the Butternut Bakery’s website so that you, too, may know the joy of personal fluffiness. Please indulge responsibly.
In closing, I will share with you my second favorite element of National Dessert Day… the un-official motto: “Life is short, so let's make it sweet!”

GratiTuesday – Gratitude’s Four A’s
Most weeks for GratiTuesday I explore, or offer gratitude as a way for you to feel better, happier, etc. This week let’s shift the focus from you and your happiness, onto someone else. Let’s practice gratitude on others.
Let’s practice “The Four A’s for Expressing Gratitude.” Pick a person, any person. Oh, and it is not necessary to apply all four A’s to the one person. You may decide to spread your A’s around to different people throughout the day. As well, the A’s need not be addressed in any specific order.
The Four A’s of Expressing Gratitude are: Appreciation, Approval, Admiration, Attention
The first 3 of these 4 can be expressed for things great and small. In fact, noticing and acknowledging little things may have more impact because they are all too often overlooked and taken for granted.
The 4th A is actually a big deal, for without attention, many things would quite literally be missed. Attention may be the one A we strive for in absolutely every encounter with another. Giving someone your full, complete, undivided attention is both the very least you can do, and the highest compliment that can be paid.
But why do we want to practice The Four A’s for Expressing Gratitude on others? Does gratitude shift your perspective? Yes. Does it lift your mood? Yes. Do you feel better — happier — when you engage in gratitude practices? Yes. Well, if a personal gratitude practice does all this good stuff for you, then it stands to reason it will be good for others when you practice gratitude on them. Spread the good. It’s a public service.
And if public service is not your thing, consider this - when you are instrumental in positively affecting the experience of another… it makes you feel good, too. This is the fundamental law of reciprocity in action. What goes around, comes around.
All credit for “The Four A’s for Expressing Gratitude” go to Canadian-American motivational public speaker and self-development author, Brian Tracy. You can catch his video with this title on YouTube.

GratiTuesday – Grateful for Hispanic Heritage Month
We are mid-way through celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month… Its purpose is to acknowledge and celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
My personal gratitude for National Hispanic Heritage Month is tied to my family’s heritage that traces our maternal ancestry back to the Indigenous Maya of Mexico. In fact, our matrilineal descent has been traced back to at least the late 1800s, Mexico. I have photographs of my great, great, grandmother standing in the courtyard of her home (somewhere) in Mexico.
The maternal side of our family tree has always been fascinating to me. No doubt because it was not openly discussed when I was a little blue-eyed blonde kid in Massachusetts. “Tell me more about the things you won’t tell me!,” I demanded. Not surprisingly, I was shushed a lot for my persistent line of inquiry into what was clearly not mainstream America...
As a child I wanted to know all about beautiful silver jewelry my late maternal grandmother wore. I begged for stories about the mysterious tin masks hanging on her walls; these masks were definitely not local, nor were they modern. To my young eyes they were clearly artifacts from our family’s long ago history in a far away land that no one would ever talk about. What were the masks’ purpose? What did they symbolize?… There were even photographs of my mother as a young blonde child posing in traditional Mayan clothes. Color me intrigued!
So here on this 16th day of National Hispanic Heritage Month, I pause to reflect on all that I do not know – and long to learn – about the origin stories, cultures and contributions of my maternal family descended from the Indigenous Maya people of Mexico.

GratiTuesday – Gratitude and What’s Next

On this GratiTuesday I notice I have been pondering ‘what’s next?’ a lot lately. And by ‘lately’ I mean since mid-January, and then all through the early spring, and summer and now here we are falling into autumn. That’s a lot of pondering and uncertainty.

‘What’s next?’ A question that popped up with each news cycle. ‘What’s next?’ A question that was equal parts exasperation and incredulity. ‘What’s next?’ A question that now feels less like a question and more like a statement of uncertainty.

Humans, as it turns out, don’t do well with uncertainty. Our brains are wired for pattern recognition and risk assessment based on predictable patterns. When our environment becomes consistently inconsistent we freak out in some form or fashion. Long term the results can include “decreases in motivation, focus, agility, cooperative behavior, self-control, sense of purpose and meaning, and overall well-being,”…

Not to worry, Grant and Goldhammer have outlined 3 strategies to overcome overwhelm and reset brain strain caused by chronic uncertainty:

1. Set expectations with realistic optimism
2. Lift to bigger-picture thinking
3. Embrace candor

While the 3 tactics listed above are sound, there is a 4th. If you guessed ‘gratitude’ as this 4th tactic, then you are both correct and clearly have been following my series of weekly essays about gratitude.

For more information about how to “Use Gratitude to Counter Stress and Uncertainty,” consider perusing Christopher Littlefield‘s October 2020 Harvard Business Review article… … …

‘What’s next?’ Hopefully whatever is next for you will involve some sort of regular gratitude practice that supports your intention to be realistically optimistic with expectations, while remembering the big picture that is your whole life, and candidly expressing what is so for you.

GratiTuesday – Gratitude for 5th Season
GratiTuesday Greetings! Loving late summer this year, as is usual for me. Celebrating every outdoor moment, preferably on the beach. Ignoring the all-too-early introduction of all things pumpkin-spice and Halloween. Insisting on summer’s presence right up until the autumnal equinox, and even then soaking up every ray of sunlight like a squirrel stashing its stores for the cold, dark season to come.
Late summer is held as The Fifth Season in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Joseph Cardillo, Ph.D., a research psychologist specializing in mind-body medicine, shines some light on the influence of the seasons on our psyche - individually and collectively - as well as for our personal physical health and well-being. He writes, in a HuffPost article, "The Promise of the Five Seasons", of our innate connection to Nature. Acknowledging each season’s particular sensibility offers us an opportunity to intentionally connect and flow with the rhythmic cycles of nature.
Spring: Embrace the Power of New Beginnings
Summer: Create Abundance
Late Summer: Gain Rootedness
Autumn: Find the Justice of Letting Go
Winter: Dream of Quietude
Late Summer is at the center of this cycle. It is the fulcrum point around which the other four seasons revolve. It invites a pause for reflection and assessment in between the cycles of growth and decay so one may become grounded. In so doing, Cardillo asserts , “You see who you have been, who you are and who you want to be.”
The Fifth Season’s invitation - for many of us this year - is essential to resetting from the upset of recent events. Consider taking a brief respite from present-day concerns to realign with “who you are and who you want to be.” Rest assured that these late summer ‘fruits’ create the ideal set up for Autumn, Winter and the coming spring.

GratiTuesday – Gratitude for Awareness
It is GratiTuesday… right now. Another benefit of practicing gratitude - however you choose to do so - is that in so doing, in each moment of the gratitude practice, you are fully present. This type of present moment awareness is fundamental to delivering its much sought after benefits such as reduced anxiety, decreased depression and more restful sleep.
Michelle DeWitt expands upon this theme in an article written for The Panchamama Alliance entitled, “10 Questions To Bring More Awareness To Your Gratitude Practice.” She briefly explores the pitfalls of a culture that values immediate gratification and materialism, and then offers the antidote; letting go of past disappointments and future expectations through a present moment gratitude practice.
"...the type of peacefulness and happiness that comes from within is significantly more fulfilling and sustainable than happiness obtained externally.” Michelle DeWitt / panchamama.org
Thankfully, Michelle provides a list of 10 prompts to redirect our attention:
1. What relationships am I thankful for?
2. What am I grateful for that I learned about myself the past year?
3. What activities am I grateful for? ... ... ...
