Toivo the Therapist, LPC Mental Health and Addiction Counseling

After having someone working with me for 3 months…then bringing someone else on, I finally updated my website. Still nothing fancy but neither am I.

Shout out to Sara and Allison for being patient with my procrastination. They are the best.

Hello. It’s me. I’m here.

I keep saying I’m going to post more about mental health because I probably should right? seems like something therapists do.

So my question, whether you would consume this content or not, what do you think would be the best way to go about it.

Facebook posts? A blog? Short tik tok kind of videos? Longer podcast kind of videos? Just record myself taking? Write a book? I have considered all of these recently. My brain is seriously convinced I could write a book if I would just put my thoughts to paper lol.

SOOOOO What do you think would be the coolest? Or maybe two of those things who knows. I just want a way to share some of my perceptions of mental health and A LOT of my concerns with what I think is wrong with how we address it.

Sooooo any feedback would be rad. Hope you’re all crushing life.

There are two types of human growth.

The first requires self-reflection, learning, experience, vulnerability, supportive family/friends, resiliency, open-mindedness, honesty, etc.

The second involves breaking others down to give the appearance that you have outgrown them.

A lot of people in the world go with the second option. That sucks. Don’t do that.

Support people. Growth is in endless supply. There’s enough to go around.

Hey I’m so bad at posting on here but just had a thought.

I think I take for granted that I get to be a part of change everyday. My job puts my in a place to see and experience human growth just about daily.

It is ridiculous what helping someone does to your mood. All the feel good neurotransmitters.

So your homework for today, go do something nice for someone today. I’ll make a list of possibilities.

-Make someone a gift
-Write something nice about a friend on FB
-Compliment a strangers outfit
-Give a person in need $20
-Take a friend...or a stranger to lunch
-Text someone from you haven’t talked to in a while and tell them how much you appreciate them
-hide a gift in public for a stranger to find
-volunteer to help a friend with a project

There’s a few. Go do your weekend homework and help someone out. Promise it will be great.

Life would be a lot simpler if we all just supported each other.

Takes way less effort to say “hell yeah how can I help you accomplish that?” than it does to try to dissuade or derail someone because you don’t like or believe in their goals.

You deserve to find your own personal Olive Garden...even if it’s a Denny’s. This metaphor just hits.

Just a little pick me up video today. Zach Anner is a prefect person.

Hope you’re all doing well. Be proud of yourselves today.

I need to post more on here. I’m trying. I’ll do better.

Johann Hari is one of my favorite humans. I just reordered his book Chasing the Scream. It’s probably one of my favorite books on addiction and the “war on drugs”. I also ordered his book Lost Connections which I have not read yet but I assume it’s amazing too.

And here is the link to his “Everything you think you know about addiction is wrong” Ted Talk which every person should watch.

Ok. There’s an update. I’ll do better at being active on here.

Today marks exactly 1 year from the last day I ever worked for someone else. Completely self-employed for a year. I have been my own terrible boss for an entire year.

Thanks to my family for supporting me to start a business blindly with very little knowledge of what I was doing.

Thanks to my friends for gassing me up when I doubt myself and reposting my posts and referring their family/friends to me.

Thanks to my therapist-besties for supporting each other and giving feedback and suggestions and being the best.

The biggest thanks to my clients that trust me and keep coming back to see me and allowing me to tag along in their lives. Thanks for all your hard work. I am looking forward to watching everyone CRUSH IT in 2021.

And I guess I’ll thank myself too for figuring out some sort of employment that I can be myself with and actually enjoy most of the time.

The First Law of Thermodynamics (Conservation) states that energy is always conserved, it cannot be created or destroyed. In essence, energy can be converted from one form into another.

I’ve seen a lot of loss this year, both personally and just seeing so many friends lose loved ones.

Just so you know their energy is still present. You will continue to carry their energy till you pass it along. That’s how it works. Initially their energy appears in the form of sadness. That’s ok. Be sad for a while. But eventually you let their energy transform into something we want to carry with us. That way we always can “hear” or sense that person we lost in everything we do.

I love you all. Sorry this year has been s**t. If you need anything let me know.

Because you’re not a real therapist unless you have stereotypical therapy words on your office wall. (Also good practice cutting out letters on the scrollsaw. Go follow for my other wood stuff).
