What started as stomach pain ended with amputations — and a mission.

In March 2022, Louisiana grandmother Chris Davenport woke up with severe stomach pain and was rushed to the ER. Less than 24 hours later, she was in septic shock.

At CHEST 2025, Dr. Hollis O’Neal of FMOLHS shared findings from 100,000+ ED encounters across five hospitals using a multi-pathway protocol to screen for sepsis. By incorporating both EHR-based clinical decision support and physician ordering options across 5 hospitals:

- IntelliSep reached 75% of potentially septic patients in the ED
- 38.4% of septic patients were tested in a median of 15 minutes from arrival in the ED
- 33.9% of septic patients were tested in a median of 36.4 minutes from arrival in the ED

These results underscore how tailored sepsis screening workflows and not a single trigger may support faster clinical action in real-world ED settings.
