What type of yoga is it? The usual Western practice of yoga is either slow (as in many hatha yoga classes) or repetitive (as in many astanga/power yoga studios). We believe that with hundreds of yoga postures handed down the centuries, there is no need to be repetitive. We may slow things down or speed it up to suit the students. It brings the body, mind and spirit together to lower cortisol and improve serotonin levels. Students are encouraged to embark upon their own internal spiritual journeys even as they flow with the class. Breathing is also emphasized as a way of creating mindfulness. These are multi-level classes. Please adjust to suit where you are that day. Everything is optional. Nothing is mandatory. Is there a set fee? Membership is based on one's financial ability. The range is from $5 to $10 per session. Students are free. What should I bring with me? Please bring a yoga mat (most department stores have them) and a bottle of water if needed. If you have a block, it would be useful for some asanas but it's not necessary. What is leela? Leela in Sanskrit means play. Although yoga is a serious mind-body-spirit practice that is thousands of years old, it lends itself to a sense of child-like play.

Friends in Cincy, I may be teaching a course on Hinduism ("The Hindu Paradox") at OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of UC) if it gets to the enrollment minimum. This in-person 5-session course is for people over 50 and will be held at the Adath Israel Synagogue in Amberly Village on Mondays from 11 to 12:15, starting September 29th. Here's the flyer. Hope you can make time for this fun and thought-provoking experience with lots of Socratic/Upanishadic discussion.
In this course, we will also be examining the roots of yoga in Hinduism.

Stress Containers
If you haven't seen the recent Yoga Leela article on "Stress Containers" in Wyoming Neighbors magazine. Here it is. Please tailor your practice to systematically and comprehensively include the areas of the body (and mind) that are "stress magnets."

Hope you'll join us as you're able on Sunday or Tuesday or Thursday.

Yoga comes from a land that invented Chess, the number system that we use (vs. the Roman numerals), and the concept of zero (the Romans didn't have one).
The commonality among all of these is Raja Yoga (mental yoga). Imagine the concentration needed to climb these stepwells. I climbed the former but didn't have time to do the latter (for which I'm glad :-)).

Yoga is an art, a form of dance and sculpture. To us of Indian origin (and there are about a billion of us), there is no yoga without India and its compulsive need to create art (perhaps as a survival response to constant invasions from the west and the north).
