I became a midwife because I learned a lot about myself through my own pregnancies and childbirths. Through my own birth experiences, I discovered within myself confidence, intuition and wisdom that have made me the woman, wife, mother and friend that I am today. It is my passion and calling to provide affordable and family-centered midwifery care. I truly enjoy assisting moms to find their inner strength and helping families to grow. https://www.intuitivemothermidwifery.com/about-kristy

Fall break! We had TWO wild births this week - to be written about when I have processed them more. But now, our next homebirth client is due at the end of November, and we have a busy season coming up for us December through April. We greatly appreciate some time off call as we will each take some time to recollect mentally and physically rejuvenate ourselves by doing a few of the things we love. If you are a client, we always have someone on the emergency extension for true emergencies. Our text and email may be abandoned for a while on unpredictable days as we take day trips or just enjoy family time.

The Umbilical Cord: God’s Lifeline of Design

This is the cross-section of an umbilical cord. You’re not just seeing tissue. You’re staring at one of the most astonishing works of divine engineering.

Inside this perfect design are two arteries and one vein, wrapped in a protective cushion called Wharton’s jelly. This jelly keeps the vessels from twisting or collapsing, ensuring that the baby’s lifeline is never cut off.

Through those vessels flow oxygen, nutrients, and antibodies from the mother, while waste and carbon dioxide are carried away. It’s a two-way system that operates with flawless timing, connecting two bodies in perfect harmony.

While the baby’s lungs aren’t yet breathing and its stomach isn’t yet digesting, this cord does it all. It feeds, cleans, and sustains life. And when the child enters the world, it seals off naturally. No design flaw. No mistakes. Just precision.

No random process could ever invent such a system that links two human lives, sustains one through the other, and then detaches right on schedule.

What you’re seeing here is not evolution. It is the craftsmanship of the Creator.

Breastfeeding doesn’t just make milk.. it keeps the hormone prolactin high, which rewires her brain to be more alert, sensitive, and tuned in to the baby.

At the same time, hormones like estrogen and progesterone stay low, which affects her mood, energy, sleep, and even intimacy.

So if she’s more tired, more emotional, or more focused on the baby than anything else.. it’s not “just in her head.”

It’s biology.

Breastfeeding keeps her body and mind in a postpartum state for as long as she nurses. She’s not back to “normal” yet. She’s doing life-sustaining, body-altering, and emotionally demanding work every single day.

Thank you for the patience, understanding, and effort in taking care of her. 🤍

He’s here! I had the honor and privilege of catching a second grandchild. Naomi and I assisted Lauryn & Harrison as they welcomed sweet Remus on Monday, September 29th. He weighed just 9 lbs 10 oz and wanted Grandma & Auntie Midwife to help him out with his nuchal hands and a shoulder cord a bit in the way.

Midwifery can be an all-consuming calling, as it should be. The emphasis on women’s rights and feminism has robbed women of the gentleness, softness and need for support and sympathy that we inherently have and should show each other. For most of us who are called to midwifery we are first and foremost mothers simply wanting to help others to also become and experience the fullness of mothering. The feminist and woman-powered twist on midwifery is a delusion. Through our weakness we are used to bring life into this world. In our hardest moments of labor, women deserve a midwife to be there to remind her that she has the strength and courage to selflessly welcome her baby.

I have no greater honor in this life than to have developed a relationship with my children that they call me when they need me, trust me to be there in their times of needs and welcome me to be part of their adult lives and families.

We are thankful for this beautiful child.
Remus Michael Kirk Healy, we love you.

We helped welcome twins this month! 40.5 for twins isn’t something you hear of often. With proper prenatal care, this mama supported herself and these beautiful babies, labored with such dedication and strength and then welcomed her precious son and then just 8 minutes later also a daughter. Twins and breech are delicate topics and we had both with this dyad. They kept taking turns flipping breech until the very end; in labor, both were descending and kinda fighting to present first. We are thankful that there are hospitals willing to support twin and breech birth. This was a late planned transfer to the hospital. Our team supported the family exclusively through the pregnancy; provided labor support at the hospital; and then resumed exclusive postpartum and newborn care. This is an example of community midwives working with families to obtain the best support possible - including finding hospital support that will best support family choice.

Just as our first appointment began, the phone rang that we had a mama in labor. We thought we might make it through at least that appointment. But it didn’t happen. We rushed off to meet a baby. The GPS started to take us over the mountain and there were washed out areas that made the unpaved trail too dangerous. We backed up about 1/2 mile to the main road and drove around the mountain. It was a good thing we could generally find our way since the GPS kept trying to redirect us. We arrived and mama wanted to know how dilated she was and Kristy assessed her as complete but baby was a bit high yet. Daddy was still driving home from work. So mama labored waiting for him. She breathed through contractions and then started to push as he pulled up the driveway. Her water broke just 2 minutes after he walked in and we welcomed a little girl less than 20 minutes after he arrived at home - she was incredibly tangled in her cord; it was wrapped around her hip, thigh and foot!

The exclusionary language has been added to SB 507. Thank you to all worked on this: MANY state Senators but I had direct contact with Rosemary Brown, Dawn Keefer, Pat Stefano, and Kristin Philips-Hill; board members at ACNM especially Kate McHugh, CNM and Nicole Chaney, CNM and so many more. We appreciate that so many individuals came together to work across many groups to protect families in Pennsylvania.

Good afternoon, everyone!

We have received encouraging news today regarding the proposed amendment to SB507. The language regarding non-nurse midwives was accepted and added to the bill! PAMA received an amended copy this afternoon and I will share a screenshot below of the language added.

We are deeply appreciative of the Committee’s thoughtful consideration of the concerns raised by Pennsylvania midwives and families.

This bill not only establishes a clear licensure pathway for certified midwives in Pennsylvania, it permits nurse midwives and certified midwives to practice with the prescribing authority needed to serve families effectively.

And now, as requested, it includes explicit exclusion language protecting the continued, autonomous practice of lay midwives, direct-entry midwives, and other unlicensed birth workers as it pertains to this bill.

This approach both modernizes and strengthens midwifery practice in Pennsylvania while safeguarding the cultural, historical, and community traditions of midwifery that are essential to so many families across the Commonwealth. While this is not blanket protection for non-nurse midwives, it excludes us from this conversation and puts the focus of this important bill back where it belongs -on the midwives it was written for.

Again, PAMA would like to express appreciation to leadership at ACNM, the Senators and Committee members who heard the collective concerns, and the PA midwives who worked quickly and professionally to ensure that this legislation reflects the diversity of midwifery care in Pennsylvania.

I will update as the Committee moves forward with consideration of the amendment and we have more information as to the movement of SB507. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

-Jennifer

My Story

A laboring mama needs compassion and support. She needs encouragement and someone who can understand what she is experiencing. I truly enjoy assisting moms to find their inner strength, and helping families to grow with a holistic and natural approach to pregnancy and life. Having attended hundreds of births as a midwife and doula, and also naturally birthing my own eight children, I incorporate both my professional and personal experiences from the past 18 years. Helping women to achieve a natural birth is my passion. I have attended births in all settings: hospital, birth center, and at home. When a child is born at home, I have witnessed the positive difference it can make in the lives of all family members present. I work in accordance with the Midwifery Model of Care, which assures that you are fully educated, prepared, and confident in the decisions you make regarding the birth of your child. Consultations are always free. I offer affordable payment plans, and can accept some insurance after a verification of benefits. I am currently accepting clients in the Southern Central PA Region, including York, Adams, Cumberland, Perry, Dauphin, Lebanon, and Lancaster Counties. For more information, you can see my informed consent information on my website or call me directly. https://www.intuitivemothermidwifery.com
