"I was great at 50% of what my clients needed. But what about the rest?"

That moment of realization, shared in our newest episode of Collaborative Conversations, captures why interprofessional practice matters.

IU IPE's Dr. Barbara Maxwell and Carrie Hagan, Esq., of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law challenge two of the biggest myths about collaborative work:

1. It's only for healthcare professionals.
2. It's more theory than reality.

Prof. Hagan shares a powerful story about the time she realized: "I don't have to do this alone."

Whether you work in law, social services, education, or public health, collaboration isn't optional. It's essential.

The second season of Collaborative Conversations is available today.

Students are talking about our Interprofessional Core Curriculum.

This four-stage curriculum brings together future professionals from all health and social care fields in a collaborative learning environment.

"I'd recommend it for everyone. It's been amazing to get to know different professions and learn how we can incorporate that into patient care." - Jacob Kydd, Indiana University School of Optometry

Students report breaking through preconceptions about other healthcare roles while developing crucial collaborative care skills. The program combines online learning with in-person, hands-on collaborative experiences.

Focusing on Meaningful Resident and Student Impact

Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center Director, Dr. Barbara Maxwell, was a guest speaker in one of Dr. Julie LaMothe's classes in the Indiana University School of Nursing. During this hour-long interview, Dr. Maxwell touched on the importance of evaluation.

At IU IPE, we believe collaboration must be effective. That’s why evaluation is central to everything we do.

Whether it's a classroom simulation or a community-based project, we ask:
* What impact are we aiming for?
* How will we measure it?
* Are we meeting the needs of all students, professionals, patients, and communities?

By measuring processes and outcomes, we ensure our programs are innovative, equitable, inclusive, and responsive to real-world needs.

At IU, we’re not just preparing the next generation of professionals. We’re creating a culture of collaboration that drives lasting change.

Invitation: Synergy in Action: Celebrating Interprofessional Collaborative Excellence

28/04/2025

When Ean Drew Plude, a first-year medical student at the Indiana University School of Medicine and a veteran, joined the Veterans, Trauma, and Treatment (VTT) program, he thought he had signed up to strengthen his understanding of veterans’ health needs.

He didn't expect to experience a shift in perspective:

“I had never considered that the burden wasn’t just on the veteran—it was also on the families.”

Through powerful guest speakers and interprofessional collaboration, the VTT program challenges students to think beyond the individual and see the lasting impact military service has on families, too.

Every semester, the IU Center for Rural Engagement partners with IU IPE to create learning experiences that go beyond the classroom. Real change starts with real conversations, community partnerships, and empathy-driven education.
