When racecar driver Todd Stark started experiencing breathlessness, he got out of the driver's seat — and into his doctor's office.

That decision saved his life. His provider referred him to M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. To get back to normal life, he'd need a lung transplant.

A donor came through at exactly the right time.

Now Todd is living with a new set of lungs.

If you’ve ever considered becoming an organ donor, take a few minutes to read his story. It could help you make an informed decision — and start a conversation with your family about your wishes.

After a major heart event, Susan, an M Health Fairview physical therapist, found herself afraid to get back to some of her normal activities, like exercise. She found her second chance with cardiac rehab.

These programs rebuild strength, confidence, and long-term heart health. Yet data show women in Minnesota are far less likely than men to even be referred to or start cardiac rehab after a major heart event.

👉 Only about 3 in 10 women start cardiac rehab after a qualifying event, compared to 4 in 10 men — even though participating improves recovery and reduces future risks.

This isn’t just a stat. It’s a missed lifeline.

In August, Winton Forsberg, 91, was doing yardwork with his daughter when he started feeling unusually tired. The next day, swelling in his legs and shortness of breath sent him to the emergency department at M Health Fairview St. John’s Hospital.

The heart care team quickly diagnosed severe aortic stenosis. Winton had a minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) just one month later.

Thanks to a smooth recovery, Winton was soon back at his daughter’s house in time to help rake fall leaves. 🍁

More on the TAVR procedure in comments.

Our hearts are heavy as violence in our state continues to harm lives and ripple across our communities. These events affect patients, families, and the healthcare teams who care for them, even when they occur outside of our hospitals. Healthcare settings must remain places of safety, healing, and dignity for all.

As healthcare organizations, our mission is to heal—to provide safe, calm, and equitable care for everyone who needs it. Violence has no place in our communities or in healthcare.

We urge community leaders and elected officials at all levels of government to take immediate steps to deescalate harmful rhetoric and violence, and to use their influence to promote peace, safety, and constructive dialogue.

These incidents increase stress and pressure on our teams who remain deeply committed to all who need care.

We stand with all who have been affected by recent events in Minnesota and remain committed to delivering the care our community needs.

When emergency medicine meets prime-time television, accuracy matters.

Jacob Lentz, MD, an emergency medicine physician with M Health Fairview Lakes Medical Center, is part of the team that tells the emergency room story on the screen with the HBO Max show The Pitt.

“Emergency medicine is complex, human, and demanding — and it happens every day in communities across Minnesota," Lentz said.
