Our hearts are heavy as violence in our state continues to harm lives and ripple across our communities. These events affect patients, families, and the healthcare teams who care for them, even when they occur outside of our hospitals. Healthcare settings must remain places of safety, healing, and dignity for all.

As healthcare organizations, our mission is to heal—to provide safe, calm, and equitable care for everyone who needs it. Violence has no place in our communities or in healthcare.

We urge community leaders and elected officials at all levels of government to take immediate steps to deescalate harmful rhetoric and violence, and to use their influence to promote peace, safety, and constructive dialogue.

These incidents increase stress and pressure on our teams who remain deeply committed to all who need care.

We stand with all who have been affected by recent events in Minnesota and remain committed to delivering the care our community needs.

When emergency medicine meets prime-time television, accuracy matters.

Jacob Lentz, MD, an emergency medicine physician with M Health Fairview Lakes Medical Center, is part of the team that tells the emergency room story on the screen with the HBO Max show The Pitt.

“Emergency medicine is complex, human, and demanding — and it happens every day in communities across Minnesota," Lentz said.

We are aware there’s been misinformation circulating about law enforcement presence in healthcare settings and what that means for patients.

What remains true—always—is that our mission is to care for people. Every patient who comes through our doors is treated with dignity, compassion, and respect, no matter who they are or where they come from.

Fairview’s long-established policies guide how we respond when law enforcement is present, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Our policies are designed to protect patient privacy, safety, and access to care, while adhering to applicable laws. Fairview is required to follow all applicable laws when caring for patients who arrive at our care sites under custody of law enforcement.

To be clear:
• We do not allow ICE to circulate in our facilities
• We do not share patient or employee information with law enforcement without proper legal documents requiring Fairview to do so
• We protect patient privacy under healthcare law
• We provide care regardless of immigration status
• Our staff are trained to follow clear procedures to ensure care, safety, and confidentiality are protected
Our clinics and hospitals remain places where people can seek care without fear. Even in uncertain times, especially in uncertain times, that commitment does not change.

At 94, Joan Duff is doing “pretty darn good."

Joan recently became the first person in the Twin Cities to receive a transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement, a breakthrough option for patients with severe tricuspid valve regurgitation who previously had no safe treatment choices.

“When that valve leaks, the heart has to work much harder,” said Gregory Helmer, MD, a structural and interventional cardiologist at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital who led Joan’s minimally invasive procedure. “Over time, it can leave people exhausted and short of breath.”

Today, Joan is breathing easier, has more energy, and is back to taking care of her own home. Most importantly, she’s able to enjoy more time with her family.

“This is exactly why this technology matters,” Dr. Helmer says. “It’s about helping people live better and feel better — at any age.”
