The “toxic ping pong effect” is a very underrated side effect of DIY detoxing- where the body reabsorbs mobilized toxins because it’s under-resourced and unable to eliminate mobilized toxins. This is why some people feel terribly will when jumping on a detox.

It’s true that the body is more overburdened than ever by toxic compounds, however we can’t treat detoxing like it’s just another clean girl aesthetic wellness ritual. Effective detoxification takes patience and understanding, ensuring your body has the ability to handle increased input and the capacity to effectively finish the job.

Things have changed a lot since Hippocrates coined the famous phrase “all disease begins in the gut.”

While the gut and its integrity remains a pillar of our health, modern life has placed the liver under unprecedented strain.

Hippocrates had no context or language for the mycotoxins, biotoxins, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, plastics, and volatile organic compounds your liver would be responsible for filtering out, and our thinking about how to support a body under duress must evolve.

A sluggish, overburdened liver creates systemic imbalance at every level manifesting clinically as:

- Hypothyroidism

During perimenopause, fluctuating estrogen can disrupt histamine balance.

Estrogen stimulates histamine release, and histamine in turn stimulates more estrogen — a feedback loop that can overactivate the nervous system.

Histamine isn’t just about allergies. In the brain, it’s a stimulatory neurotransmitter. When levels run high, it can show up as:

• sudden anxiety or panic
• racing thoughts
• insomnia
• heart palpitations
• feeling “wired but tired”

If anxiety feels cyclical, reactive, or worse around ovulation or before your period, histamine dysregulation may be part of the picture.

Supporting nervous system regulation, estrogen detox pathways, and histamine clearance can make a meaningful difference. 🤍

A few highlights from our week in Idaho, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and the Teton Mountains 🏔️ so grateful for this time away unplugged in nature!

🌟Sienna caught her first fish 🎣 and rode a horse for the first time!

🌟 lots of hiking and forest bathing! My fav hike was Taggart Lake Trail @ Grand Teton National Park.

🌟 got to visit and pray at the Chapel of Transfiguration. Built in 1925 in the mountains to serve ranchers who prior had to go over 12 miles on horseback in rough terrain to worship.

🌟 stayed in a converted covered wagon!!

🌟 fell in love with the sweetest ranch dog where we wee staying 🫶🏻

🌟 got realllll close to a wild bear, a herb of bison, and a family of elk 🐻

🌟 met the best people around nightly communal fire pits and hiking trails ❤️

Functional medicine sees the person holistically and views the body as a dynamic and interconnected system rather than separate parts.

Example: When there is thyroid dysfunction- FM doesn’t look at the thyroid through a pin hole. It considers how heavy metals, stress, immune dysfunction, nutrient status, and liver and gut health are causing or contributing to the thyroid being out of balance.

FM understands that there are no lone wolfs when it comes to the body, it’s an interdependent system and when one area suffers, everything is affected.

Most importantly FM seeks to bring vibrant health to facets of your being!

I am so passionate about this guys.
When I was 22 I was on the GO. I was doing things I loved and that I found purpose in, but I completely neglected self-care and rest. That on top of a poor diet, a diet-coke addiction, and very little knowledge about nutrition, I ended up with a hormone crap storm in my body. My cortisol and androgens were through the roof and it showed!!
I had irregular periods, hair loss, break outs, crazy food cravings, and I was always wired.
One quick visit with my doctor and I was on birth control and it set me on a trajectory of band-aid fixes for the next few years. No real healing took place and ultimately this had HUGE repercussions for me and my health. Two years later my body faced the health crisis of my life. I had no idea there were other options out there. I wish I would have known. So if you don’t know, I’m telling you now-you don’t have to take the pills. You have choices and you are the ultimate authority over your body.
These days my skin is clear, I have balanced hormones (minus the expected swings that occur in your mid-thirties), and I feel connected to my body.
With that being said I also wrote this post to say that not everything can be cured with diet and natural modalities. I wish it could, I really really do. And in many if not most cases it can, but there are circumstances where medication is warranted. I have been in that position-I am in that position, and I carry no shame about taking medications when they’re necessary. And I hope you don’t either. BUT when medication merely serves as a way to mask your symptoms - it’s a HUGE disservice to your life.

There is so much I could say about motherhood, about my journey to get here (the depths of which only few know), about loss, grief, joy, redemption. This is such an emotionally charged day- so much duality, so many conflicting emotions existing together in harmony.

Sending so so much love to all the moms and moms in waiting who are also wading through an ocean of feels. Feel it all my loves. Embrace yourself and your story.
