DOVE Transplant - Living Kidney Donation for Veterans

DOVE Transplant - Living Kidney Donation for Veterans DOVE's mission is to find, educate, support and match living kidney donors to Veterans in need. DOVE stands for Donor Outreach for Veterans.

DOVE believes in the power of community engagement to help remedy the kidney donor shortage for all. We are a nonprofit organization that serves as a "matchmaker" - raising awareness about Veterans who are waiting for a lifesaving kidney donor and connecting them with potential donors (friends, family, anonymous) who want to help. Once donors contact us, we provide them education and support throughout the evaluation and surgery to enhance their experience and ensure any expense is fully covered. Many of our donors, Veteran recipients remain connected with our growing community and stay on as volunteer mentors, advocates to continue raising awareness about lifesaving organ donation. DOVE is based in NJ however we serve Veterans throughout the US.

Thank you KIRO 7 News for sharing Alisha's living kidney donor journey and the profound impact she made on a Veteran's life. Raising awareness about the dire need for living kidney donors in our country and showing that living donors can live a long and normal life with one kidney and help save a life with their other kidney is critically important. Thank you to Alisha and James for continuing to share your story and helping to inspire more to consider donation.

Another DOVE living donor kidney transplant is happening today! Thanks to the collaboration between two transplant centers Froedtert and Hackensack, Navy Veteran (Bill S) was able to donate directly to a fellow Navy Veteran (Tom J) without either having to travel far from their home and family supports.

Bill was inspired a family member who had donated, when he learned about DOVE and being matched with a Veteran - especially a fellow Navy Veteran - he was all in.

Bill and Tom have not yet met - but both hoping to connect via Facetime when they are recovered.

Please join us in praying for a safe and successful surgery and easy recovery for them both.
Thank you Bill! for stepping up in this profound way to give a fellow Veteran hope and health. Thank you to all lifesaving organ donors. Thank you to the caregivers and friends and family support teams and to the transplant programs that are working and saving lives every day.

Hundreds of VCU Health employees have served or are active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. As Veterans Day is recognized this week, we share our gratitude for veterans, service members and their families for their unwavering dedication to the country, the community and our patients.

Kevin W is a Veteran who has been waiting the longest within the DOVE program (nearly 4 years). He had several family members who were medically declined and DOVE had referred several donors, but none were cleared. But Kevin's village - his family and devoted mom Gail, his Boston VA team, and DOVE assured Kevin, we would not give up.

Steve O, from MI learned about DOVE from an internet search last year. He was cleared for donation in WI and then paired with Kevin. He was looking forward to donating directly. Unexpectedly, he was told this wouldn't be an option. Steve was disappointed, but committed to getting Kevin transplanted through voucher/exchange donation. 4 months after Steve's donor surgery, Kevin received his "payback" living donor transplant via NKR on 11/11/2025.
To celebrate, our "village" gathered in Boston last week. Below are photos from our visit. Steve and his wife Melissa met Kevin and his family for the first time. The video shows Kevin emotions during his last dialysis treatment the day before his surgery.

We are so happy for Kevin and his family and wish him the very best as he embarks in this next chapter in life. Thank you to Steve and all for your kindness and generosity. Thank you to the kidney and transplant professionals and teams that save lives through the gift of transplant, thank you to the loving family and support teams that ensure those waiting are never alone.

Another wonderful local news story from ABC 8News - WRIC that highlights the work of DOVE and celebrates another DOVE team: Alisha and James. Their pairing is also a good example of how community directed outreach can have a ripple effect. Donors like Alisha learn about one Veteran in need of a transplant - in this case Kori White. But Kori's campaign generated many inquiries to DOVE and Kori was able to receive her transplant (thank you Bob ❤️) Both Kori and Bob just celebrated their first year Kidneyversary!

When Alisha learned DOVE has over 360 Veterans registered and waiting for a kidney, she wanted to help another Veteran in need.

VCU matched her with Navy Veteran James Ellis. As you will see in this story - both thriving and now share an extraordinary bond.

We believe more people will listen and learn about living donation when they feel connection towards a group in need. More efforts can and should be made to enable donors to direct their gift in ways that are meaningful to them. We are thrilled other communities like Kidneys For Kidsforkids are utilizing this approach. As communities we can collaborate and ensure no one feels alone in their search and their wait.

We are hopeful for a day when there is a ZERO wait for all in need.
