Homeward Bound Adoptable Pets Photography Helping find homes for shelter animals one smile at a time. My name is Wendy Mezzenga and I volunteer at Virginia Beach Animal Care & Adoption Center.

I am a pediatric nurse by profession and a crazy woman with a camera for fun. My love for animals inspires me to help them. Capturing the cute and often times silly pictures of the pets waiting for forever homes brings them to life and shows their personality. Sometimes that’s all they need to spark someone’s interest. My dream is that every animal I photograph will find wonderful forever homes and that people will see shelter animals for what they are—adorable and deserving love—just like all animals. Feel free to contact me by email at mymiataisred@yahoo.com or by sending me a message through my page. I will do my best to help you. In the mean time, if you would share these cuties it would make all the difference in the world to their future.

Oh hey girl! I see you! Then again I might be seeing anyone, as my vision is blurry. It's alright though, the rest of my senses are on point! I can "see" you just fine if you sweetly call my name and my vision goes straight to a perfect 20/20 if you happen to have a wonderful smelling treat in your hand when you call me! Yep, differently abled isn't slowing me down one bit. You see, at 8 years old I've been given a second chance at the life I so deserve and I think that is just fabulous! The first half of my lonely life was less than perfect, but all that means is that I've got so many happy days ahead of me to catch up on that I'm super excited to find a family of my own that has a little extra happy to spare! I would love to have a fancy collar and a bed of my very own, in a home surrounded by all the happy my toothless, lamb eared self can handle, and believe me when I say, I can handle a lot of happy!! Take me outside, throw me a ball. I will even chase it with my less than stellar vision and grab it with my tooth nubs, all the while smiling the biggest pittie smile you have ever seen! Basically I will do anything to show you how easy I am to love, as I'm a people pleaser. I want to be close to you so badly that when we are together I'm going to wiggle every inch of my body in the hope that you will notice me and smile. I really want someone to notice and adore every inch of me, every day, until you find that you can't imagine one single day of your life without me! I'm a prim and proper (go ahead and laugh, but remember, it's what's on the inside that counts) lady who will never have an accident in the house and I promise to be a good girl while you are away. Now, I know, you cannot even imagine why I'm sitting in the shelter without a person of my own. Short story as I'd rather concentrate on my bright future, but I know you must be interested. I lived my life in a home with another dog and my person, who passed away and left my sister and I without a place to call home. We didn't have much vet care and we certainly didn't get fancy collars. But it was home and it was all I knew. I came into the shelter unsure of all the strange people. I was literally shaking in my paws. I have since learned that people are nice, they carry treats and they take me outside to potty, which I really appreciate as I don't want to potty where I live. My best day ever was when I realized I was safe here. I am cared for. I am loved. I am enough!
I would prefer a home where I can be your one and only best girl, and what a best girl I promise to be!! I'm going to love you like you've never been loved and if you've never seen the miraculous transformation of a dog down on her luck that finally gets her happy ending, then let me be the girl that shows you and warms your heart every step of the way while I live my best life! Come and meet me! Don't delay and let someone else steal your sunshine! That's me!! I'm going to be your sunshine!! Please follow your heart and open your home to me. I promise you won't regret it, because I'm Madolin, I'm the most adorable girl ever and I'm enough!
You can meet this very special, sweetheart of a girl now at Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center, 341 S Birdneck Road. She's currently residing in the medium size dog adoption room. If you don't see her just ask for her by name and/or ID # 1906-0213.

Our boy Elliott is a stunning pit mix with a combination of attributes that make him look somewhere between the cross of a bunny rabbit and a polar bear with a little bulll terrier or dogo mixed in there somewhere. Whatever his combinations are, he's a solid, handsome boy that is sure to turn heads anywhere he goes!
Elliot is around 2 or 3 years old and around 60 pounds. He came in with a female who has since been adopted. We believe he likes other dogs, but he's got a bit of a rude play mannerism, so bring your dog along with you to make sure they can handle each other's play style. Elliott is a busy boy and is very treat and praise motivated. We were not sure how much he knew, because let's be honest, we couldn't get past those good looks to see that he also has a pretty sharp brain under all that brawn and handsome features.
While playing around with him today taking pictures we noticed that he was doing things that resembled tricks that dogs are often taught. He made us giggle when he backed up, twice and then when that didn't get him a treat he sat up on his haunches and asked pretty please! He knows stuff. Anyone who wants to take the chance on Elliott will certainly have fun figuring out what else he knows!
Elliott seems to be house trained. He appears to really like humans, both big and less than big. Not sure about cats, but I know he came in with a female dog that he got along great with.
Elliott has a lot to offer. Please help us find him a home before his personality starts to fade. Shelter life is not easy on any dog, and a young boy with a desire to be out and about playing is going to feel the effects of life inside of a kennel much more quickly that a lazy dog that loves to nap.
Please bring your dog and stop by Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center, 341 S Birdneck Road soon to meet this bunny rabbit wannabe! He's waiting to meet you in the medium sized dog adoption room. You can also call the shelter at 757-385-4444 x2 with any questions you may have on Elliott. We'd love to hear from you!

Cheese is a special needs boy currently residing at Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center. We are searching for a foster/rescue to pull him as his needs are more complex than can be dealt with at the shelter and as judging quality of life is often skewed in the shelter environment we'd like to get this guy into a rescue where he can have a better shot of living his best life.
What we know about him is that Cheese is a small dog of 30 pounds that we believe is full grown. He's good with other dogs and loves people. He's got a face that's a little off center, which only makes him that much ore adorable in our eyes and ears that are reserved for only a select few! Bottom line, he's a cute pie!
As are as his orthopedic needs go, we have taken x-rays of his hind end but are not 100% sure what his needs are going to be. He gets around find, until he gets tired. Then he falls. But he never, ever stops smiling! He's got a love of life and a desire to fight for whatever he needs to do to be someone's heart dog. Even if it means wearing himself out while the crazy lady with the camera and the hot dogs chased him around. Cheese imprinted himself on not only my heart but the heart of the little lady helping me with the pictures. He's a perfect lap size guy that I would love to see sitting on the lap of his foster mom/dad sooner, rather than later.
Cheese seems to be house trained. He does try to hold his potty until he is let outside. He knows the sit command, although he seems to be more comfortable standing or laying. He is good taking treats and is literally just the most adorably distinct looking pup you will quite possibly ever have the pleasure of knowing!
Please contact the shelter at 757-385-4444 X2 if you have an questions about pulling or fostering Cheese. Ask for one of the Jessica's and they will point you in the direction needed to get Cheese out of the shelter and into a rescue. Thank you for taking the time to read about our special boy and please share him if you are not able to physically help. Remember, sharing is caring!!

I spent my morning with this skinny mini, better knows as Mickey Lee. I had not seen her in a few months since she left the shelter with the hopes that foster care would better suit her needs as she was not thriving in the shelter environment.
A little background on this cutie pie: After spending the first three years of her life with her family and then finding herself a resident of a city shelter Mickey spent the next few months jumping and spinning and trying to figure out how she could possibly find her family. Needless to say after all of her daily work in her 3x5 kennel she now called home, she was never able to find her family and all she managed to do was work off about 15 pounds of body weight. She was literally disappearing right in front of our eyes. Then a foster stepped up. And her future looked much brighter. Mickey went into foster care spinning and pacing and having accidents in the house. Then she learned to trust again. Then she learned that this guy had her back and she let herself relax for the first time in months. Mickey no longer spins or paces. She's proven to be the house trained girl she was when she first came into the shelter. She's proven that she's a sweetheart that loves to be with her person and will kiss you any time you get close enough for that tongue to reach you. Oh, and she's gained back about 5 pounds. Looking good Mickey!!
Today I was tasked with taking pictures that would show the girl behind the skinny body and sad eyes. It took me a while, but in the end I found her! And guess what? I really like her! I learned that she loves to play and do zoomies and that she is a champion treat catcher! I also learned that she knows the sit command, will stay when asked (even when I through a treat right out of her reach) and will go into the down position with a treat and a little patience. She's very smart and is willing to learn. She will be a fun dog to work with. She pulls on her leash and would probably do much better with a harness. But once again, I think she could learn to walk nicely if given the chance. She's a sponge!
She showed me a lot of her personality, but still I felt like I wasn't quite connected to her. She was holding something back, and then it happened. I took out the princess crown and the pearls. After all, she is a girl. Let me tell you, Mickey lit up like a Christmas tree! She let me put that crown on her and not once did she try to get it off! Even better was the huge pittie smile that overtook her serious face. That's it. That's what she was trying to show me. She's a princess and needs someone that will treat her as such! Now she won't require a crown on a daily basis, but Princess treatment is a must! This princess may need to be the queen of her own castle but foster dad says if the right dog comes along she may be willing to share her person. We just haven't the opportunity to test her with any well balanced dogs yet. You will need to bring your dog along to see if she will deem your dog royalty enough to share the castle with! Also note, she's a tidy castle keeper! She is crate trained and doesn't mess with things that aren't hers when left to free roam. She simply spends most of her day looking out the window dreaming of life outside the castle walls.
If you are interested in giving Mickey Lee a family of her own to adore and follow around then please call Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center at 757-385-4444 x2 and ask to be put in touch with Mickey's foster dad or If you have any questions or would like to meet Mickey, you can contact foster dad directly at at bobwainwright@hotmail.com. Mickey Lee’s ID number is 1709-1584. You won't be disappointed! Side note: bring snacks. She loves snacks and he who holds the snacks holds the keys to her heart! Thank you for considering adoption!

The long legs of big boy Max bounced his lanky body around in his kennel in sheer joy at the thought that maybe he was going outside! He was friendly and silly with a goofy smile on his face that I just couldn't resist. Outside he was happy and outgoing, wanting to see and smell and hear and visit everything and everyone he saw. Max is an energetic young boy, estimated to be 1-5 years old. He loves to run! He loves chasing tennis balls but not always retrieving them; but Max doesn't care because it is all in the name of fun! Max was surrendered to us when he family realized he did not like being left alone and because of that he will need a new family where someone is home more often than not. He's a people dog and proud of it! Max needs time and attention. He needs to have daily exercise and playtime. We have all heard that a tired dog is a good dog, right? Maybe Max just needed more exercise than he was getting so as to keep him quiet and resting when his family had to go out. Max may just need a bit more time and patience while adjusting to a new environment. We just don't know exactly what made him unhappy being left alone so let's find Max a home where someone is home most of the day, where he can have the companionship he desires. An experienced dog owner may also be best for this young goofy boy. Everyone who knows Max, knows he is a great boy, loving and affectionate, so spending lots of time with him should be a pleasure for the right person. Max walks pretty well on a leash although enthusiasm sometimes gets the best of him. All in all he will be a pleasure to have walk by your side throughout your neighborhood or community. Also he is house trained and good with children. He's a player and a silly boy so it's a given that he will have the kids giggling right along with his silly antics! If you have a resident dog, please bring him or her in for a meet and greet so we can see how they are together. We don't know how he feels about cats as he did not live with them in his last home. Currently Max is in a back kennel waiting for a spot on the adoption floor so if you don't see him, please just ask to meet him and we will bring him out to say hello! His id number is 1711-1531. Thank you for considering adoption!

If you looked up cute the dictionary you would likely find this scrumptious face staring back at you from the page. Bella (aptly named) is a gorgeous, compact blue and white pit bull that has a personality just as beautiful as her face! Bella is a middle aged adult of about 5 years old. She has all the manners of an older dog perfectly combined with the s***k and love for life of a pup half her age. In other words, she is house trained and won't eat your slippers! She also knows some of the basic commands and is food motivated which will make training her a breeze if you are so inclined to continue teaching her. Bella came into the shelter as a surrender due to her owners living situation. She lived with other dogs, so please bring your dogs along to meet her if you think you might be interested in this beauty. She is said to not like cats. She is timid inside the kennel but her personality shines once taken outside. She loves to play and really enjoys interacting with people and showing off her talents (note the ballet picture). She is a little nugget, weighing about 40 pounds. Her surrender papers say she likes kids and I can just imagine that is true as her personality is very sweet. I imagine she will be a great couch potato at night and a track star during the day if you are into that sort of thing. Come and meet Bella soon. Let's find her a home before shelter life wears her down. You can meet her today at Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center, 341 S Birdneck Road. She is currently in the back waiting for a spot on the adoption floor so ask for her in the front lobby by name and/or ID # 1803-1527 and we will be glad to bring her out to say hello! Run, don't walk. This girl is a looker!!

Neveah is a young adult mixed breed girl that is medium in size and huge in personality! I had some help this weekend getting pictures and Neveah was one of the lucky dogs that was taken outside for play time and pictures of her interacting with a group of young adults. She did not disappoint either! Energetic. Bouncy. Puppy like. These are some of the first things that came to mind when I was thinking of our time spent with this cutie. On that note, I would like to impress on anyone interested in Neveah that she is going to need an energetic family with a sense of humor as she tends to be full of puppy antics! She will need someone in her life that can laugh it off and keep working with her on her puppy like behavior. She may have tried to eat a few pair of shoes while outside...you know, like most puppies will do, however these leather shoes still had feet in them. If you can't laugh at that then you don't need Neveah in your life as she's probably going to nibble on your shoes as well. She's got that twinkle in her eye that is at once adorable and quite possibly a little mischievous . On a great note, she's food motivated and is clearly smart and willing to learn if given the opportunity. So here is your little lump of clay and you are the sculpture. Take her. Sculpt her into an adult dog that you will be proud of and who will no doubt still be able to make you giggle. She's funny and she knows it. If you are looking to be a one dog kinda family, as Neveah doesn't want to share her people with other pups or cats, and are up for the challenge of bringing our funny girl into your life and teaching her all the adult things, then please stop by Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center, 341 S Birdneck Road and ask to meet Neveah, ID # 1709-1650. We will be happy to bring her out to meet you. You will not see her on the adoption floor as she is currently being held in the back until a space on the adoption floor open's up. Thank you for considering adoption!

Hi Guys! Can I talk you into taking a minute and sharing this sweet face? Helen has been waiting such a long time for a family. She's an older gal and wouldn't it be great if her wait wasn't much longer

Helen is a s***ky little old lady that is deaf and almost completely blind. She has a few good teeth left and the ability to sniff out treats and claim them as her own even with her deficits. Helen would like nothing better than a person of her own with a lap made for sitting on! If you have a lap and it is currently looking for a small dog to keep it warm then please consider Helen to fill that spot.
I would say this little one has had her fair share of an adventurous life. For starters she ended up being picked up at a busy intersection in VB where she was on a little walkabout...but remember, she's 10 pounds, blind, deaf and elderly. Good grief Helen. If anyone deserves a shot at living out their life with a family that will keep them safe, it's you!
Helen is listed as a JRT mix and although we don't know exactly how old she is, we have her listed as 8+ years. I believe she does fine with other dogs, but bring yours along just to make sure they will get along. Although I made light of Helen's situation I would like to be honest and say that she isn't doing wonderful in the shelter. She is confused and she has started to spin in her kennel. She really needs a soft place to land where she can get back to being her s***ky, almost toothless, perfect old lady self.
Come and check out this cutie pie now at Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center, 341 S Birdneck Road. She's waiting to meet you in the small dog adoption room.
***Update: Helen has been moved to a foster home where she lives with other dogs, and she has been such a great visitor! Her foster mom would love to tell you all about her, so please call the shelter at 757-385-4444x2 and they will put you in touch with her.

If you are a fan of the 'Red' dog then please take a minute and check out this boy we call Red. He is a 1 year old pit mix with a love of life that is immeasurable! Red is going to be best in a home with active people because he enjoys activity. Check out his pictures and imagine that dog sitting on the couch and watching netflix. Not going to happen. He is such a handsome dog with all the right stuff in all the right places! His 50 pound form is perfect, his smile is perfect, but he's a typical little boy. He seems house trained, but he marks frequently when out for a walk. He knows the sit command, but it's really hard to keep his bottom down for more than a minute because he's got much more interesting things to do. He pulls on the leash. He would be great at pulling a skate boarder! Red likes other dogs, but he's going to play like he does everything else...with gusto! If you are looking for a fun dog that will help you get your beach bod back after a long cold winter then please stop by Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center, 341 S Birdneck Road and ask to meet Red (ID #1802-0542). If you don't see him on the adoption floor we will be happy to bring him out of the back to meet you as he's currently waiting for a spot on the floor.

Excited to exit that kennel and get on the road Sandi was perfectly fine with me handling her and harnessing her up. I laughed though as the straps of my large harness had to be let out more to accommodate Sandi’s chunky tummy! I clearly misread how thick her midsection was as compared to her thin head! After a few extra moments, we were outta there! Sandi was very happy to get out of that cage. She’s a great walker! She had a smile on her face the whole time. I would never have guessed that with the size of her tummy but honestly she was ready to roll. We had a great pace going but when I turned around towards the shelter, I could sense her disappointment. Hopefully she’ll find a new home quickly and be able to walk as much as she wants! Do you like to walk? Sandi is sweet and friendly to humans but she prefers older ones, adults mainly as she didn’t seem to like the children in her previous home. I don’t know how young they were or if they didn’t respect her space so let’s go with Sandi preferring older kids (12+) who respect the four leggers in the house. She can get a bit hyper at times which is to be expected with a 2 year old as most of you know. We are told she can be clingy, too! Does your lap need a doggie in it? Clingy Sandi may be the answer! Keep in mind if you are interested in our chunky monkey that she should not be around or live with other animals, cats nor dogs alike. She prefers to be an only pet. All the attention to her! And she’s good with that! Sandi is house trained, too. She has a few tiny fur-less spots on her back leg which have no effect on her positive attitude and friendly personality. She is currently residing in our medium dog adoption kennel but if you don’t see her please just ask about her! Her id number is 1802-0510. Thank you for considering Sandi and get ready to break in those running shoes that have been sitting in your closet waiting for inspiration!

Coming at you with twice the fun of my normal dog post! I would love to introduce you to a pair of pups that have lived their whole lives together and are currently sitting in the shelter together hoping that someone will notice them and take them home so they can get back to being the sweet house dogs they were not too very long ago. Old Man (12) and Scout (10) are hilarious and sweet as honey, respectively. Old Man is "talkative" when he wants something and Scout is timid, taking a few minutes to trust new people. They were surrendered to us when Old Man's ear issues because too much for their owner to handle . They brought Scout along with him as they are joined at the hip. They are sharing a kennel at the shelter, but at their age, shouldn't they be sharing a couch and not a kennel floor? They both seem to get along well. They both love to sniff. They are both house trained and walk great on a leash. Old Man is a gentle giant. They don't come much sweeter than this white faced boy. Both dogs like other dogs and kids. Neither have ever been around cats. If you would like to meet this special couple yourself and see what has made all the staff and volunteers fall in love with them, then please stop by Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center, 341 S Birdneck Road. Ask for them in the front lobby and we will bring them out to meet you. Thank you for considering giving a forever home to these two. The rewards are going to be endless!!
