Andrew Newsom’s heart function dropped to just 25 percent three years ago. At only 29 years old, he was experiencing retention and fatigue, symptoms he initially attributed to COVID-19.
“I really thought it was just Covid because I was so tired. But when I started retaining a lot of water in my legs, I knew it was serious,” says Andrew. What he would soon learn was that his condition was far more serious he was facing heart failure, a condition that runs in his family.
Andrew was referred to the Kaweah Health Cardiology Center, where Dr. Sarmad Said quickly recognized the severity of his condition and scheduled a left heart catheterization with coronary angiography. When the procedure was first scheduled, Andrew didn't go through with it — he was very scared of the unknown and worried because heart failure was part of his family history. It took a lot of time, family support, and multiple conversations with Dr. Said and his staff to finally convince him to do it.
"I was really scared, but Dr. Said and everyone there really helped me be brave and go through with it," Andrew recalls. “I’m so grateful they didn’t give up on me — they literally saved my life.”
With the procedure completed and ongoing medication management, Andrew has successfully managed his heart failure and is very relieved to be alive.
For those living with heart failure or other cardiac conditions, access to high-quality care close to home matters. To learn more about the Kaweah Health Cardiology Center, visit KaweahHealth.org/Cardiac.

Heart failure happens when the heart can’t pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. While it can sound frightening, early diagnosis, the right care team, and modern treatments can help many people feel better and stay active.
Swipe to learn how different heart conditions affect the heart.
1️⃣ Normal heart
A strong, flexible muscle that pumps blood efficiently through four chambers to meet the body’s needs.
2️⃣ Nonischemic cardiomyopathy
The heart muscle becomes weakened for reasons not related to blocked arteries, often progressing quietly before symptoms appear.
3️⃣ Noncompaction cardiomyopathy
Extra ridges form inside the heart, making it harder for the muscle to contract and pump blood effectively.
4️⃣ Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
The heart muscle thickens abnormally, which can restrict blood flow or cause irregular heart rhythms.
Understanding these terms is the first step toward understanding your heart health. Learn more about cardiac care at Kaweah Health: KaweahHealth.org/Cardiac

Many Americans feel confident about aging well, but new research shows heart disease risks are often overlooked.
According to a recent national survey from Cleveland Clinic, nearly 1 in 4 adults aren’t sure if they are at increased risk for heart disease, even though most have at least one known risk factor. The findings reinforce the importance of prevention, early awareness, and understanding your personal heart health at every stage of life.
