Another very important and informative conversation! Anyone with eyes can see that we are getting dramatically sicker as a nation. When it comes to our health it’s becoming more important to do our own research. Knowledge is power. Almost all of the chronic health problems today are lifestyle related and a huge portion of them are reversible.

Root cause medicine is starting to gain traction because it’s effective. Instead of putting people on medication for life, some practitioners are digging in to why their patients needed the medicine in the first place and working to reverse symptoms and eventually discontinue the drugs. All the body’s systems are interconnected. For example, gut health directly affects mental health. So much so that the gut has been called the second brain by some researchers. All this to say, what we are learning is that pharmaceutical drugs may help symptoms but they likely don’t cure the root cause of the problem. We have to dig into the dysfunction that caused the symptoms in the first place and address that.

Talk to your doctor about it! If your doc has no interest in hearing your concerns, there are others out there who will listen and take you seriously!

Question: Do you have a doctor or practitioner that works with you on lifestyle, tells you that it DOES matter what you eat, tells you that it’s possible to come off of certain pharmaceuticals, tries to find the root cause of your issues? Let me know who they are! I like to keep a list so I can recommend them to people! ♥️

There are so many fad detox diets and juice cleanses out there that promise to clean out your system and leave you feeling amazing. Don’t buy it!

If you want to detoxify, learn about drainage. Drainage refers to the different parts of the body that aid in the elimination of toxins. If you are detoxifying (pulling toxins out of the tissues) but not draining properly, the toxins are staying in your body and recirculating! Not good!!

Here’s how to make sure your body is draining:

🔹1-3 bowel movements per day. If you are constipated, you aren’t getting rid of toxins!
🔹 Love your liver! It works hard to get rid of toxins but can get congested and sluggish. Avoid or reduce alcohol, get rid of junk foods, artificial sweeteners, and industrial oils. Add in liver supportive supplements- message me if you want recommendations.
🔹Get lymph moving and sweat! You can kill two birds with one stone here by exercising, jumping up and down, dancing, etc. These movements get your lymph flowing and sweating helps you detox! Lymph flow can also be supported with massage and sauna.
🔹Support your mitochondria. These guys are the powerhouses of our cells. They sustain life! But they can become dysfunctional due to toxins, stress, poor diet, etc.
Cleaning up your diet, reducing stress, optimizing sleep, and supplementing with bioactive carbon minerals can recharge your mitochondria and restore their capacity to detoxify your cells!

Once your drainage pathways are in good shape, then the body can detoxify properly. I highly recommended working through this with a practitioner!

Happy Draining!! 💩

Toxic chemicals are in everything these days! It’s very unfortunate but we really have to be proactive if we want to avoid them.

Here’s a list of toxin containing items that I can think of off the top of my head:
Packaged food, non-organic fruits and vegetables, tap water, grass sprayed with fertilizer and pesticides, personal care items, household cleaning items, cookware, anything plastic, home building materials, candles, and air fresheners. The list goes on but I’ll stop there. The point is, toxic chemicals are everywhere.

The reason this is such a problem is that although our bodies were designed to detoxify and eliminate harmful substances, there’s only so much we can handle before our toxin bucket overflows. This can lead to major disfunction in the body.

Some of these toxins have been shown to be:

👎🏼Endocrine disrupters
👎🏼Immune system depressants
👎🏼Central Nervous System disrupters
👎🏼Cancer promoters

There are loads of symptoms that can be attributed to an elevated toxic load but that list is too long for this post!

I don’t want to promote fear around this topic. It can be very overwhelming to think about trying to avoid all the toxins and chemicals. The truth is, we can’t - because they are everywhere. But there is so much you CAN do with this knowledge. You can drastically reduce your toxic burden by avoiding some of the major offenders!

Start with the following changes:

✅Buy organic meat and produce

✅Filter your drinking water

✅Start swapping out your personal care and household cleaning items for non toxic ones

✅Stop using plastic water bottles and food storage containers and opt for glass and stainless steel

✅Cook with stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic

✅Ditch candles, air fresheners, and plug ins and use either essential oil diffusers or non toxic candles

These steps will make a huge difference for you and your family! Check out the Think Dirty app or the EWG Healthy Living app to find clean products!

Have you ever been overwhelmed trying to decide how you should eat to improve your health?

There’s Paleo, Keto, Carnivore, Raw, Mediterranean, etc., and they ALL claim to be the best for healing.

If you are just beginning your health journey, sometimes it can be better to forget all that and focus on some simple changes that won’t make you want to pull your hair out.

Here are five adjustments you can make that will make a dramatic impact on your health:

1. Eat Whole Foods. The majority of the food you consume should be in its natural form. It should look pretty much the same on your plate as it did when it was pulled from the ground or picked from a tree. Choose foods that haven’t been processed and put in a box or a can. These foods lose much of their nutrient density and are loaded with toxic non-food ingredients like MSG, food colorings, and artificial sweeteners.

2. Choose to buy grass-fed, pasture raised, and wild caught. Yes, it’s more expensive, but the health benefits are tremendous. These animals are fed their natural diet and are not given antibiotics or steroids. They are treated humanely and given room to roam and graze. Supporting these farming practices benefits our health and the health of the animals we eat. Win-win!

3. Try to buy organic as much as possible. Toxins have a huge impact on our bodies and can interfere with the proper function of our hormones, digestive system, neurological system, and more. Check out the EWG’s Dirty Dozen list.

4. Avoid highly processed, toxic oils like canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil, and cottonseed oil. These industrial oils are often used in restaurants and packaged foods. Instead, opt for healthy oils like coconut oil, grass-fed butter, ghee, avocado oil, tallow, and olive oil.

5. Hydrate with filtered drinking water. Most water contains harmful contaminants like chlorine, lead, mercury, and pharmaceuticals. You can check the EWG’s Tap Water database to see what’s in your local water supply. I recommend a reverse osmosis water filter under the sink for drinking water. Your fridge filter is not enough. Use a quality filter or buy Mountain Valley spring water!

Have you ever wondered if you should remove wheat from your diet?

The problem with wheat today is that it has been genetically altered, hybridized, and manipulated and is really nothing like the wheat that our ancestors ate. This goes for all kinds of wheat you can find in the store, even the really “healthy” kinds. Did you know that whole wheat bread increases blood sugar levels more than table sugar? 😳 This is bad news for our metabolic health.

Another problem with wheat that many people are unaware of is that it can cause an autoimmune response in the body. The reason for this is that the gliadin protein in wheat can cause intestinal permeability or “leaky gut” which lets foreign invaders into the bloodstream. Some proteins from food or bacteria that get into the bloodstream can look like human proteins. In response, our immune system can begin to attack its own organs. This can manifest in many ways including joint inflammation, skin rashes, brain fog, and even full blown autoimmune conditions.

Wheat has also been linked with all sorts of intestinal issues like acid reflux, diarrhea, dysbiosis, gallbladder disease, constipation, and IBS. Gut disruptions and dysbiosis have been associated with multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, diabetes, ulcerative colitis, and Chron’s disease to name a few.

Wheat also has major impacts on the brain such as brain fog, cravings, mood disturbances like anxiety and depression, and cerebellar ataxia due to an immune reaction. It has even been suspected that due to insulin’s effect on the brain that wheat has been a major contributor to Alzheimer’s disease.

Yikes! I know it can be overwhelming to think about eliminating bread from your diet but if you have health issues and want to feel better, you may want to consider it. The great news is that there is a lot to gain by cutting out grains. People have been able to reverse chronic health issues and get their life back by removing them. If you want to learn more about wheat and its effects I highly recommend the book Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis!

One simple change can make a huge impact on your day. You can set yourself up for success by eating a satisfying breakfast high in fat and protein which will give you more steady energy through the day. We burn through carbs very quickly which results in feeling hungry faster. Ditch the sugary breakfast and opt for something more substantial!

Here are a few examples of a better breakfast:

🍳Eggs and bacon cooked in ghee with avocado

🍳Breakfast casserole with sausage, egg, and bell peppers

🍳Leftovers from last night’s dinner. (Breakfast doesn’t always have to be “breakfast foods”, just eat to fuel your body!)

Don’t let the thought of getting healthy overwhelm you! Start by making this one small positive change. It will help you make better food decisions throughout the day!
